So I pulled to the side of the road to park and do some snowshoeing only to discover that what looked flat was in fact a nice deep ditch. 4WD wasn't getting me out (and forgot to try crawl control, d'oh!) but someone was nice to enough to offer to pull me out. I didn't see any recovery point and he said the hitch would be fine. I don't have anything in the receiver so he hooked to the emergency chain loops and while that worked it did bend it.

So, aside from some fancy steel bumper, what does one hook too to pull out backwards?

You buy a recovery point that uses a shackle. There are numerous versions of this below, I just grabbed a link so you could see it.

    https://www.marks4wd.com/rth001kit.html

also don't ever hook onto the chain parts, they are not rated as a recovery point. Just an emergency so the trailer doesn't;t go shooting out from behind you into traffic.

You can get a D-Ring to go in your hitch receiver. In a pinch you can also put a strap around a pin through the hitch receiver mounting hole.

Grade 8 bolt through the hitch pin hole and a wing nut works pretty well. Or get one of the hitch shackle mounts like listed above.

Use the D-ring shackle and NOT a trailer ball hitch.

I saw one trailer ball break when the tow strap was at full tension and it acted like a slingshot sending the ball flying into the tailgate of the towing vehicle.

I don't get why people buy the receiver d ring. if you have the receiver it is held in by the pin. any good recovery strap is looped on both sides, so just stick the pin through the loop through the receiver. $2 recovery point.

True. But in some cases there is no strap around, or the strap you have is purposed elsewhere in the recovery scheme, so you need to hook the winch directly to the truck and the winch hook may not fit inside the receiver to go around the pin.

The edges of the receiver tend to be a little angular, so if your pulling on an angle there is a small risk of strap abrasion.

In an quick pull out of the way, I found my soft shackle went through the receiver hole and wrapped around with room for the strap.

Yes, I know sharp edges and soft shackle is a bad combination.

If you have a Fat strap, it's not going to fit.

While this does work, you are actually putting far more stress on the pin than if that exact same pin is used in one of those receiver D ring things. So it’s far safer to use the receiver than just the pin.
Like most recovering it can be done in many ways, just depends on the level of safety/ bend some shit you’re prepared to take.

Exactly. You change the leverage on the pin by pulling toward the middle. Not sure if you can bend it or not, but I like the hitch.

What do you do when you bend the pin inside the receiver? Then you’ll have a permanent recovery strap mod, cause it’s not coming out without some cutting.
