 My wife and I are considering moving to the Alpine/Springerville/Eagar area. We are both biologist. I cover the aquatic world and she is terrestrial. Nothing is official but it looks like we can both get hired in the same office (super rare for natural resource jobs). I am hoping to know more by the end of the week but I’ll have to make a decision pretty quick. I would assume we would be moving early September.

Looks like great recreation, hunting and fishing. I don’t care for busy cities and we want to live in another small town (the smaller the better). We love getting involved with our communities and helping out where we can.

    Any info/advice would be great!

Sounds like an ideal situation, you’ll love it here, especially in that area.

Flying into PHX Saturday to do a few days of house hunting. Looking to make the move before Thanksgiving - I have shoveled my last snow. We're in the process of selling two houses in the Boston area. Closing on the one we don't live in this Friday and putting our actual residence on the market as soon as we find a place out there (I only want to move my shit once, so I need a place to move it into before I have to move it out of here).

We have no preference where in the Phoenix area we end up, since neither of us needs to commute, and we don't go out so often that being closer to particular restaurants, shops, theaters, or whatever really matters, and no kids so the school district is not a factor. More just a case of finding a house we both like in a neighborhood we both like.

Over the last 35 years I've spent a total of at least 5 years in the Phoenix area for work and vacation - all seasons, so we know what we're in for weather-wise. I'm very familiar with everything east of the 17, and we'll be looking at places in the Moon Valley area, the Willo District near downtown, down near South Mountain, the Desert Ridge area, and up towards Carefree & Cave Creek. Not paying the premium for a Scottsdale or Paradise Valley address (It's not that we can't afford it - I just don't see what that extra dough gets you beyond "prestige".)

My wife also set up viewings at several houses out in Surprise. Other than stopping at a Burger King once when heading out 60, I don't know anything about the area. Anything in particular to be aware of, or just another city in the Valley?

Looking forward to donating all my down jackets, wool socks, and flannel-lined pants to charity, being able to go for a walk between December and April, and most of all, not having my Taco smell like a wet dog because the frame had to be sheep-dipped with Fluid-Film.

Dont do that just yet, itll only take a year for 60 to feel cold.

Also, looks like you lined up some showings already, do you have a realtor?

My wife set us up with a broker in the Surprise area because there's a house that we're prepared to write a check for on the spot if it's as nice in person as it is online. We were going to make some calls this week about the other places. I figured I'd just go on Zillow and look up the listing broker for the house we're most interested in for each area and see what they could do.

Sounds good. If you wind up not liking the broker or dont want to sign an exclusive agency agreement with them I can set you up with a really good agent.

Does your agent work in any particular area, or city-wide? If we don't get the house in Surprise, a lot of what we're interested in is in the Moon Valley area or generally between the 17 and 51 and north of Northern up to the 101 Loop. I'd rather not have a formal agreement because I want flexibility, but I certainly wouldn't screw over anyone that helped us.

City wide and lives in the area you are looking. As do I, if you have questions or want specific info.

Just started the process of purchasing a second (retirement) home in Sahuarita, it should close escrow the first part of December or earlier.

I started researching dirt bike and 4WD trails and clubs. Found many in the Tuscon area. The Nogales Ranger District has some fun looking stuff just 30 minutes or less away from Sahuarita.
Northeast of Tuscon has lot of stuff too.

Here, on the central coast of CA, I have to drive 1.5 hours to get to mediocre trails and fire roads, or 3+ hours for desert rides. It will be quite a change....

Super stoked to have found this thread! Family and I are planning our first visit to AZ to explore some cities (Gilbert area) in March. The breakdown on page 1 is excellent.

Don't move to Arizona. I'm moving there to get away from people.

Just kidding of course. I bought 40 acres in Mohave County 20 years ago. When I get tired of Alaska that's where I'll go.

Haha thanks wilcam! It's under the watchful eye of a paranoid neighbor. I visit from time to time.
