Wheel bearing seal and CV dust seal install TIP

Thought I'd share this trick I devised for installing the new inner hub seal (p/n 710573) and CV dust seal (p/n 90304-A0001)

Utilizing the old seals, to install the new ones.
Old CV dust seal on left, old inner hub seal on right


First install the new CV dust seal using the old inner hub seal

Place the inner hub seal over the new CV dust seal

Use a piece of scrap wood and a hammer and tap on CV dust seal until fully seated

Fully seated

Next install the new inner hub seal, utilizing the old CV dust seal by placing the old seal over the inner hub seal and place in position



Next use the hammer and tap all around until fully seated




Done! Hopes this helps, it made it pretty slick without seal damage

Anyone know if it is possible to replace these outer CV axle dust seals without pulling the axle from the front differential? I'm about to do these next week along with my bearings and would prefer not to pull the axle out if I don't have to. It looks like the OP left them on his vehicle, but I can't tell for sure. Most of the other documentation I've been able to find shows the axle out.

 

You can leave it there. It will be much easier to pull the axle out of the spindle tho!

I did not remove the CV, however I did separate the lower ball joint from the spindle.

 

Curious, are these Toyota part numbers or auto store numbers?

Great tip OP! I used it today, but I tweaked it a bit for the inner hub seal. I combined your trick with what I did last time. Used a 6” clamp and 2 scrap pieces of wood to squeeze mine in. I always fight with it when hammering around the horn and side to side. The clamp method keeps it from popping out where you aren’t hammering. Hope this helps someone else. Thanks again OP!

 

Any idea why the outter CV seals came COVERED in some black grease? Is it just to stop rusting while it's in the packing?

I’m confused on which ones to order through Toyota and the parts department isn’t that much help unfortunately.

Are you trying to replace the entire CV axle and go through Toyota for OEM parts, and you're also replacing all seals while you're at it?

Looks like you should be good then. Unless you're wanting to replace the seal on the spindle.

 

After the seals are replaced should I put a bit of grease around them? Seems like there should be something inside there. Also, grease or anti seize on the splines? I’ve heard of people using both.

 

I ended up replacing all seals.

 

Is there a guide on the overall process, that could be referenced here?

 

Inside the joint is all gear oil so I wouldnt put any extra additives.

As a side note, If you are doing the seal, do yourself a favor and go out and buy a 2$ pvc 2" reducer. Fits right over the seal lip and you can hammer her in nice and even .
