Clear bra om the leading edges of the vehicle and Dr. Color Chip are your best defense.[/QUOTE]
Great idea! +1 on this awesome product. Have it on key areas on a couple of bicycles for years. Carefully applied, cannot tell it is there.

Not sure if this "helicopter" version might work better on a vehicle. Going to start with the above version for some front facing areas as I already have a roll

Somehow have a deep 4" long scratch on my hood already, no idea how it happened. Lots of products on Dr. Color Chip. What product do you recommend for this repair and future chips?

I’m putting my two cents in ...

I hold my truck in high value but My family, people, and time come first and foremost before anything.

With that said, I pay a lot for my truck. I want to keep it as nice as long as possible because I’m not one who can trade at will. I have to keep it for as long as humanly possible. But it is a vehicle. It rides on roads and highways with other vehicles who’s drivers don’t care about yours. Rock chips, scratches, dents, and even the occasional fender bender can and will occur. It’s inevitable. No need to cry....just fix it the best you can and move on.

I will say though, thickness of the paint not withstanding, Toyota could have clear coated all vehicles but chose to only include CC on pearl/metallic paints. The CC not only protects the paint from fading, it is much easier to work with detailing and does protect from chips, scratches, and etc. to a certain degree. It blows my mind they didn’t include it. But it is what it is. Just to say though, even with CC getting hit by a small rock doing 60 on a highway will not prevent a chip.

For chips, the basic $39.95 kit is all you need. I'd give it a try on the deep scratch a little at a time, but it's not really made for that.

Depending on finances and how OCD you are (I'm notorious), either use real touch up paint, take it to a pro to repair.

First thing I do when I get one of these newer trucks with thin paint, I strip it all off and repaint it with a bunch of old thick paint I've hoarded over the years.

@PrimerTaco is there a pic of your rock chip in this thread? I may have missed it. Wanted to see what all this fuss is about.

Use plastic dip. This way, you can take it off and re dip a different color.

M105 has been my best friend for removing minor clear coat defects like pin stripping.

After I got all my rock chips filled, lightly wet sanded and then polished, there was zero evidence they were ever there. Then I got a 3m clear bra appplied after. Funny thing is now that the front is protected I’ve started seeing chips everywhere else but the hood. Just keep filling.

Something I do is mix the clear coat and paint sides of the pen on a small piece of cardboard then apply to the chip. Use a hole puncher and punch out a few pieces of 2000 grit and glue it onto the eraser side of a pencil and lightly wet sand the blob then polish back with m105. Totally invisible if you take your time.

If you are complaining about Toyota paint, you’ve never owned a Subaru. Touch the clear coat with a terry cloth and it’s scratched. Hence why Subie owners put ridiculous rally armor mudflaps to prevent killing the paint from the rocks thrown onto the doors. Toyota paint holds up pretty good for it’s class and price range.

Pretty sure all cars off the lot have Clear coat. Any documentation stating no CC on some colors?

this has been gone over MANY times on these forums. I inquired to Toyota Corporate after buying my Super White Taco. got a letter back from them stating that the only colors they use clear coat on are the metallic/pearl colors. has been this way with Toyota since at least 2001. I don't still have the letter, but I quoted the passage on it from them in another thread.

There is no CC on colors that aren’t metallic or pearl.

I’ll have to admit, I am still fresh on the 2nd and 3rd gen yotas, but will still disagree that any new car has no clear applied over the paint.

disagree all you want, but not ALL colors get clear coated...

this is the wording from the letter they sent me after I inquired to Toyota:
We have checked the serial number of your vehicle, and there is no clear coat on the paint.
We only use clear coat on pearl or metal flake paints.

There isn’t. The CC is blended with the base paint hence a single stage paint. The CC is not applied “over” the base like in the past. In years of yore, and the metallic/pearl colors now, the CC was/is applied over the base known as two stage paint process. Much more durable in my opinion.

Thanks for the help. Im dropping it off with touch up paint for my detailer and ppf install. Funny you mention the chips everywhere besides the clear bra, I actually asked him to also put it behind the wheels/rockers/rear bumper area because I remember this being a huge problem area with my last 3 tacomas.

Looks good, but pinstripes are a bit different than chips that take off the chip guard and paint down to the metal.
