Steering column hook up

Anyone known a trick to getting this back together?

 

Cant seem to get it back together after changing starter

It seems like one of the pieces needs to spin, but neither spins.

 

According to this it's a "coupler"

 

align both the coupler and the lower shaft and then tap the coupler downward onto the shaft splines. If it doesnt move then u may have to try and spread the opening on the coupler a little bit to make it easier.

I dont know if u put and marks on the lower shaft to align the splines back to there original position or not. But try to get it the best u can. The steering wheel may be off after and u will need an alignment.

 

the threading on them isn't lining up?

 

just turn the upper shaft so it does line up.

 

yeah i didn't mark those. it didn't say to in the Haynes (FML).

now the threading is off every so slighting and i'm afraid to muscle anything.

 

Yea the manuals some times don't give you those helpful tips. But it should not be too bad. if u don't mind u can always drive it after to see how far its off and try to re correct the position as best u can.

I would defiantly try to get the notched portion of the lower shaft perfectly vertical to where the bolt will slid threw. so u may have to muscle it. At the shop we use an air hammer to move things around so they can take quite a beating just don't damage the inside or outside splines or it will never slide together.

 

there's no way i'm getting the coupler to connect the two pieces of the column. they're pretty off.

 

so both shafts have threading, but a flat part. do the two flat parts HAVE to line up?

 

yes the flat portion of the lower shaft is notched to allow room for the bolt to go into place. If its off the bolt will never go in.
You wont be able to move the lower shaft easily unless both front wheels are off the ground but u can move the upper shaft as long as the steering wheel is not in the locked position to align the notch.

 

This is a good image of the inside of the coupler to give you a better idea of how it needs to align.

Notice how a potion of the lower shaft and the coupler do not have splines.
