Well, it has been discussed. Just didn't apply the correct google-fu. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4runner-4-0-vs-tacoma-4-0.352650/

The 4Runner has the same 270 hp rating. And gets the 0w20 oil update. And has the 6.6 qt capacity.

They put the wrong oil in your truck (see oil filler cap) and it probably is fine for one 5,000 interval. If it was me I'd have them change it to the proper oil, It's up to you, but make sure you tell them what kind of oil to put in next time. They get screwed up and make mistakes like this.

Well... except for the fact that the extra mass and bulk of the tundra would overshadow the marginal increase in HP.
I.e., you end up with a lower power to weight ratio, and reduced driveability due to fatness.

They put the CORRECT OIL in it. The instructions on the oil filler cap are OBSOLETE. They should provide him a new oil cap with the current specifications, and a sticker for his user manual, in order to avoid confusion.

Please show me the new specifications I would like very much to see this. Is this incorrect? http://gp1cc.com/Toyota-Engine-Oil-Guide.pdf If this is incorrect I really would like to see the correction. Help me out here. Just tried to copy the online manual (below) from Toyota. If what you say is true looks like they have not corrected the online manual.

SAE 5W-30 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather.

If SAE 5W-30 is not available, SAE 10W-30 oil may be used. However, it should be replaced with SAE 5W-30 at the next oil change.

There's tons of oil threads on these forums about this. That chart shows 0w20 synthetic all the way back for 2005. There was something else, somewhere, that indicated that the 10k OCI was also applied for 2TR 2005+, but I think you can find that one on your own.

Great. Now we have 2 charts with conflicting info. So, TLDR; fallback to Blackstone Labs, use whatever oil you want, just change it. And don't expect 270 hp out of a VVTi engine.

I think that the main thing to keep in mind is that they didn't actually change the engine internals at all from 2005 to 2015, and even beyond 2015, the only thing they did is added an exhaust side VVT, which doesn't impact anything beyond that. The actual lubrication requirements for the engine haven't change at all from when that engine was first designed, and so whatever the newest spec is for oil changes, you can safely apply it retroactively.

The Tacos made before 05 I would stick with 5w 30 at 5K miles. I switched one time and the valve covers started leaking. Replaced them and went back to good ole top tech walmart oil. The stuff works great! The first 300,000 miles I used pennzoil and valvoline b/c its what they used and the oil place I went to. The last 300,000 I top tech has been my go too. I have an 02.

Drain that oil asap and use Royal Purple 5w 30 and new filter. If you don't know what the W means, chances are you don't understand viscosity anyway.

The lifespan of the oil is less contingent on the weight and more based on pretty much every other factor (engine, mileage, use conditions...etc).

3k mile oil changes are BS. This is what the oil companies want you to do.
5k should be safe in almost all situations
5-8k is typically the range that most vehicle manufacturers are currently using, and actually many have been doing this since the early 90's if not earlier.
8-10k+ is not unheard of. We've been doing 8-10k in our CR-V for the past 5yrs and I did 12k intervals in my Impreza for almost a decade.

I highly recommend oil analysis. I use Blackstone Labs but I think there are others as well. I have the oil analyzed at every oil change for all of our vehicles now. This has not only given me the confidence to increase my oil change intervals without ANY fear but also gives me other important info about what's going on in our engines - such as if you're seeing excessive wear, coolant/fuel in the oil...etc. Cheap insurance IMO.

    Just straight no.

The 1GR found in the post 2010 FJ and 4Runner are significantly different from the 1GR ran in the Tacoma from 2005 to 2015. The 2005 to 2015 should ONLY use 5W-30, just like the Yaris with the 1NZ.

Instead of oil I have been using water... so far so good, I think I'll stick with it.

    1GR is good with 0w20.

That said, the cap and manual state 5w30, and its cheaper.

Most dealerships don't have 5w30 bulk anymore and use 5w20 in the spin on filter 4.0 trucks.

I would leave the 0w20 but would stick to 5000 mile service intervals.
