To those that have made the switch from 285 to 255 or vice versa- which did you like more? Will you stick with whichever size you switched to?

I went from 285 KO2 to 255. I was not aware of how much I would enjoy having a lighter tire. Staying with 255 for the foreseeable future.

Can accelerate closer to stock performance, and MPG gain (+3) was an eye-opener. Lost 0.8" of lift in the trade-off.

Loving them, but instead of saving up for a winch & mount my next expense will be a regear. Most of the time I don't notice, but when I need it, I miss the loss in acceleration.
    Went from 265-75-16's to 255-85-16's

Dohh, nevermind, shoulda wore my glasses, didn't read it properly

Sumitomo makes a 235/85/16LT all-terrain tire, the Encounter AT. http://www.sumitomotire.com/Tires?linename=ENCOUNTER AT

I'm thinking about trying this out, I need better snow traction than the stock Goodyears. I've had really positive experiences with Sumitomo all-seasons in snow on my other cars, and these Encounter ATs are 3-peak snowflake rated.

Update: ordered a set off Amazon Prime tonight.

@DJB1 They're Dick Cepek Extreme Countries 235/85/16. They are pretty quiet so far and smooth no problems balancing. I haven't had a chance to get them off road yet.

so i have 265/75r17's toyo open country at2's now. im at about 50K so im getting ready to plan my next tires. i bought them originally because of the awesome weight for the size. they are roughtly 31.6" x 10.4".

i am looking to jump up to a 255/80 for the next ones. this would be 33.1" x 10". the only options i have found so far ar the toyos again, or the falken wildpeaks. they are 50 lb and 52.5 lb. the st maxx are just too heavy i think.

anyone have any other options at 255/80???

also - is anyone actually running the K02 34 x 10.5? any rubbing issues? i am thinking they might be an option as well. worried about rubbing. i know 285's are a no go without a CMC, not sure how the 34 x 10.5 compares. i do have a 2.5" lift.

Just pulled the trigger on a set of ST MAXX 255/85R16.

Mounted tonight. They actually ride better than my SL 265/75R17 Falkens - the Falkens were great tires and perfect for my stock weight DCLB OR. In hindsight, after adding lots of weight they became a little bouncy.

    Pics tomorrow.

Nice I made the same switch from P rated 265/70/17 Falkens to the E rated 255/80/17 st maxx I’m running now. I didn’t notice any additional road noise and ride quality is pretty good with the Maxxs at 32psi.

Went from 285s to 235s and haven't looked back since! Love the lighter and taller tires.

    Oh man…
For anyone thinking about the 255's on stock suspension. Thought I'd give an update on the 255/85/16 Cooper ST Maxx. Now that I've hit a few trails and the suspension has settled I'm rubbing on left turns. Ordering up the 5100 set and it should be all set. Love the tires!

    Just barely taller... 285/65/17 = 31.6" vs 235/80/17 = 31.8"

Guess they seem much taller since they are much more narrow and play tricks on my eyes

Got much better gas mileage though! Gained about another 3 MPG

Awesome! I didn’t realize that was even a size. I always think of 285/75/16 or 285/70/17. Glad the tires are treating you well.

    Looks great!
    Stock suspension?
I'm planning on 255/75/17 or 255/80/17 on my stock suspension, then lift later on.

Not stock suspension. I have 5100s with OME 888 coils up front with extended length 5100s in the rear and Dakar leaf pack. Approximate 2"-2.5" lift overall.
