apparently 2nd Gen's don't have fuel filters? ( well, besides that lifetime one that's built into the pump in the gas tank ) What the frick man!? LOL.

I've been thinking about all the little things that could be affecting my MPG's and a dirty filter was one of them, also being 10yrs old and not knowing if/when it was replaced got me googling on how to replace it. Guess I don't have to now.

Judging by my records as well, I think I need new plugs now as well. Last ones were around the 225km mark. And I still need to change out my diff / Tranny Fluid

I think I should take a vacation day and give my baby some TLC

 

The trucks don't have filters because toyota did a bunch of long term research and found no noticeable difference in fuel flow threw the filter between a 0 hour filter and a 10,000 hour filter. The only time they get clogged up with crap is if you have a lot of moisture in your fuel tank and it rusts, or the fuel you happen to be using (diesel) is dirty. I did a few weeks of research on everything that I would need to replace on a high mileage truck like ours before I bought it.

For engine swaps, the 1UZ weighs about the same as the 1GR V6 in the truck. It's power curve is about the same, but it will continue making power above 4500rpm unlike the 1GR which runs out of breath around 4800. The 3UZ is a weaker (relative) than the 1 or 2UZ motors because the bore is larger and the cylinder walls are smaller, with weaker rods. The 2UZ weighs about 50lbs more than the 1GR with the later plastic intake manifold. lots of research I have done. I am looking for an 05+ 470, or 4Runner with the plastic intake and VVT if I stick with gas. Considering diesel as well, but I also don't want to spend 10k.

These guys even offer a bellhousing and flywheel to allow a manual box to be bolted to the back of the UZ. It is for the R150F from the Pickups or 1st Gens, but I believe that the castings on the R155F are the same (haven't been able to confirm) so you may even be able to bolt the 4 cylinder 5 speed to the UZ block. I am ditching the 6 speed I think. It isn't nearly as bad of a gearbox as most on here will say, but there is no benefit of keeping it vs an R150F as their final drive gears are the same.

Raven Autosports in Bayers lake is a dealer and tuner for the Haltec ECUs. Which I think would be the easiest route to take for a V8 swap if you want to also swap to a manual. Most people who have manual swapped a UZ motor are never happy with how the stock ECU runs the motor, so a custom tune or ECU is a requirement anyways.

This of course is all dreamer talk on my part because I still want to acquire another BMW E30 and build that.

 

I wonder how often dan goes away for business.. maybe we can do it while hes gone and not tell him?

You know I thought I would like the RA60 because it is my first 6 speed. Turns out I am finding I really appreciate 5th gear. Granted, it really only matters on the highway with the trailer, where I need a little less than 6th but more than 4th. Just want to go on record with a good word for the RA60.

 

Hey everyone. New here just picked up my 09 Tacoma. 2wd base as a work truck. Found out about the frame warranty program in my research. Any suggestions who to go to in ns to have it done? I live in Cape Breton but I don’t mind driving further for the right dealership to do the best job and look extra hard for a hole to replace it outright instead of just undercoat.

I bet not at first. I'd start it up and think "bummer, another exhaust leak, she's loud!" Then if it was winter and I kept spinning the tires on take off I'd just chalk it up to the KO2's being cold and me being too aggressive with the loud pedal

I'd figure it out when it came time to change the oil... "why did my filler cap move..."

 

Hey guys, discovered this thread while looking for a truck - hopefully be joining your ranks real soon!

Question: I'm looking at an 04 dcsb in Dartmouth. Guy said someone from Calgary bought it over the phone on Monday then backed out today - was that any of you transplants/part time locals? If so, should I be worried, if not, what should I look out for in an 04? Thanks in advance

 

Ball joints are a piss poor design and like to fail. Frame rust is bad on all Tacoma's. Those are the big ones. Everything else is just ensuring that everything was actually maintained to some acceptable standard and ensuring that everything that is on the truck actually works. Otherwise you will be chasing down issues instead of driving it. If V6 they do have a timing belt so that might need to be done.

I don't know if Manual or autotragic, but is the auto trans cooler is the same design as the 4Runner (has a line running threw the radiator) ensure that the rad has been changed as they like to rot out inside the rad and eat the transmission.

All else failing the second gen trucks are finally getting to a reasonable price if you're not dead set on a first gen.

 

Thanks, yeah this ones an auto. Apparently they call that trans cooler failure "strawberry milkshake" cos that's what your coolant looks like.

I'm actually also trying to chase down a 2nd gen (mt trd off road) but having a hard time getting the guy to commit. Price isn't too far apart but right at the limit of what I can afford.
