Went from a 2004 manual V6 to a new automatic V6. Yes I test drove it, bought it, and own up to it, but did not realize the difference between manual and auto gearing. The wife can now drive it and nicer for extended traffic sessions.

No stumbling or noises or serious problems, but after 1500 miles find myself with ECT always on (may do that mod) and constantly using S mode to limit upshifts and manually downshifting to allow engine braking. Not a huge deal but now feeling like I'd prefer to not have to do this for a planned 10-15 years with this truck.

Ditching the wife is not an option, she is geared perfectly!

IMO my perceived sub par drivability is a combination of the lack of 3.5 low end torque and automatic gearing. Otherwise love the truck but feels like they went too far in the pursuit of fuel economy.

Have read thru the 4.88 and 5.29 gear threads but most are doing this to compensate for much larger tires. The few that have done this with stock tires give glowing reviews in terms of greatly reduced gear hunting and no negative effect to mpg, some reporting better.

Looking for more opinions on re-gearing an A/T V6 to 4.88 with a mostly stock setup - stock tire size, camper shell, minimal other weight. Who has done this and would you do it again, why not except for the cost?

If you’re going to keep the truck that long, it just might be worth it for you. 6th gear is pretty useless 99% of the time. May make it actually useable.

I did regear for larger tires, weight, off-roading, etc.

However I have been running stock tire size for 5 months now. I went from stock tires to winter tires and will run them to March.

Despite moving back to 35s in the summer, I am perfectly content with the gears and stock tires.

You will be happy with either 4.88 and 5.29 in a stock setup.

No problem. @max_o recently test drove my truck and might be able to provide his initial impressions
