Heard back today, they are installing a different rear axle shim to correct driveshaft angle.

I have a 2018 with 3000 miles on it. Bought it in October. Literally, the next day brought it back for vibration issues. After 6 trips and a lot of Toyota tecs the foreman took me on a test drive. He said it was the rear end and that the axles were to short by a couple millimeters. One of the times I dropped it off they literally just measured everything to make sure it was in spec. He did a test with me. At 50 mph he pulls the e brake, not hard just enough to slow you down. I felt every vibration I had always felt come and go. How he explained it to me was that the pressure from pressing the gas kept a good connection but that when you are losing speed the axles aren't being pushed against anything so the play is very apparent. Well, 5 days and a lot of money for Toyota later I had a new rear end, everything measured within spec. Problem solved

Hope this helps I know the 2018 isn't mentioned once but I figured it would not hurt to tell what happened to me

    Thank you!

I have a 2018 TRD Sport 4x4 LB. It is 4 months old.

I've been back an forth for the last two months.

Currently it has been at the dealer since December 27th and they still have it.

They have tried trans updates, tires, and brakes but nothing else with the rear. They now have a whole new front diff ordered for it as they are thinking needle bearing. I have my doubts that will fix the issue. Will find out Wednesday hopefully.

My vibe is REALLY bad. Like a rumble strip on steroids haha. Only on decel in any condition (neutral, brakes on or off, changing gears....). Switching to 4x4 does not stop it. Cold temps seem to make it happen more often (-4c and below).

I do not believe they've measured anything in the rear. They've been excellent at keeping me up to date with what they're doing.

Got to be the same as yours! Haha...

I literally was losing my mind because they did the same thing. oh its a balance, oh its the rotors, oh it's a loose suspension part. I was about to lemon law it when they had me drive with the foreman and he figured it out

Unfortunately, in Canada we do not have a lemon law!

I do believe however, if it came down to it my dealer would do whatever they can to get me into a new truck. Hoping it doesn't come to that...

They have been great here but I believe they are at a loss as well. I believe they were advised to replace the front diff by Toyota Canada just to rule it out.

A Tech, who was well aware of Tacoma vibrations rode with me. When the noise started he said "holy.....sh*t.... I've never heard one that bad! They got me a loaner and said they wouldn't drive it anymore...

    Funny thing is:

They gave me a 2016 TRD Sport SB with a 6 Speed Manual as a loaner.
The thing has 41,000kms on it, 285/75 KO2s and what looks to be an "add a leaf".
Other than the tires shaking at highway speeds (>100km/h on KO2s), this thing is as smooth as glass!

I wonder if either the Manual doesn't have the issue or the add a leaf fixed an issue with this one?

I travel for work and I have gotten tacomas that are perfect. I think it was just a select that were faulty. Like I said mine was bad by millimeters. And that caused everything.

I had a 4 runner for a couple weeks. really nice trucks but I never got anything manual so idk

    Yes that's right!

There's quite a few of us here at work that have these trucks. some with vibes, some without.
I'm hearing from a few people around town now that have serious vibrations like me.

I'm reading that TSB-0171-16 is fixing these issues. Though not applicable to 2018 MY and only in USA...
That TSB describes my symptoms almost 100%!

I'll post the results here from the new front diff install....

Are you guys lifted or completely stock? I had this issue but it was from the lift and some shims 95% fixed it that the dealership installed (which i paid for out the rear).

I had the rumble strip from new. Told the dealer about it multiple times. They turned the rear drums once which did nothing for it. When I lifted my truck it got worse dispite adding a carrier bearing drop.

After the lift I decided trying to get the dealer to shim the springs was a lost cause. I added 3 degree shims from wheelers and it fixed the rumble strip feeling. Dispite having BFG KO3’s my truck now stops smoother than ever.

I didn’t measure any of the angles. I took a chance and it worked.

I really think the 3 degree shims are needed on the majority of Off road third gen tacos. The people that say they don't need anything after lifting 2-3" are probably not sensitive to vibrations as others are. Or they have a lot of weight in the back.

    I'm stock height.

No plans for lift as of now.

    I'll definitely look into shims!

I didn't try the truck with weight actually! Wasn't thinking this way when I first brought it it. I had torque converter issues on my mind actually.

The vibration that's happening in mine would certainly not go unnoticed haha. It's not mild like others are describing by any means. It feels like a massive subwoofer is shaking my windows and interior panels loose....

    That's sad man.

They are installing the whole new front diff today. Should be ready to test drive again in the next few hours.

Techs advised it's s not simply a replacement but has a complete new part number. Never know..

    Not hopeful but fingers crossed!

What is it with all these new trucks with weird, noises, vibes etc that dealers can't do anything about. Probs the reason I haven't seen one 2nd for sale on a dealer lot. But there's 10-15 3rd gens at multiple dealers by me, all with less than 15k on them. Somethings not jiving. Hope you guys get it fixed

    Never made a difference....

They installed the new front diff and the problem has not changed.
