    Lol, what can I say... gives you an excuse to buy more machinery to make a better Canadian version? :D

    4WP has ARB (someone else pointed this out.) and Smity Built.

    There's also Wild Coast Tents. I'm going with theirs because of Location (canada), pricing, included annex in the model I want and colour selection.

    If you do end up with the Provincial Park option, a trailer that supports an RTT will allow you to move it from the bed to the trailer and give you that base camp.

    I have a couple of ground tents from a small two person to a large 8 person. The 8 person one I bought last year, and within a half hour of it being setup one of the dogs put a claw through part of it requiring me to patch it. I won't every worry about that with an RTT. Don't even get me started about the setup and take down of a ground tent (especially in the rain!!).

    My back wants a nice mattress these days :)

    RTTs have been around decades. Though, the surge in use in North America is new. So I certainly agree it feels like a fad.

    When I first saw RTT's I was WOW I want one.

    Then I thought about;
    - having to close up camp when you want to use the truck.
    - Top heavy weight
    - not very aerodynamic
    - expensive for what they really are.
    - PITA taking it on and off the truck.

    Then I compare a RTT to something like this;

    [IMG]

    or this

    [IMG]

    and the only advantage, is the RTT takes less space when not in use.

    So to take that only advantage away you get one of these;
    [IMG]

    Now I can see no reason for a RTT.

    Other than the Kool factor. :)

    I use either fold down cots or air mattresses and regular ground tents now that I'm an old guy. Lol no sleeping on the ground for me now. Some of these new tents set up in a minute or two.

    Used to be that all I needed to go camping was, a case of beer for each day, and a blanket and toothbrush.
    Age, Wife, Kids made sure those days are long gone.

    I had considered a trailer setup as well. Something to consider that you may have left out is that a rtt on the truck allows you to go where ever you point your truck. With a trailer you may be limited and hesitant to take a path because of not being a able to turn around or the trailer not being able to follow you if you will. On a trail where you go back this is not an issue. However if your going from place to place and not planning on going back this can be a problem.

    My thinking is our trip last year out in swisha. We backtracked many times. Having to back up or turn around on some of the trail with a trailer would have sucked. Now those are small enough you may be able to unhook and turn it around by hand. However it may not always be the case.additionally some parts of the trail were too tight and would have required unhooking the trailer and lowering it down or around a path. Not impossible but a pain.

    I have even considered putting the rtt on a trailer with other gear to have that base camp. So far though I enjoy being able to drive anywhere and not be limited. As of right now I am still lower than a full size with a cap so not too bad

    Front receiver hitch. :)

    LOL

    After watching the Aussies on youtube taking their trailers through some of the stuff they do ... Put some pizza cutters on 'er and give it more gas! Lol

    But yes, I agree, in the 4x4 trail camping scenario they are the nicest option.

    Definetely doable and definetely an option. Like you said the aussies have no issues.

    I think the biggest problems is there are so many options and some of them are very specific where others are versatile but not ideal in one situation but great in another.

    There is rtt, trailers, slide in campers, hundreds of ground tent variations. Problem is where one has a strong point in one situation it’s weak in another. Just have to choose what fits best and is within your budget.

    The Ardbeg camping spot the TW group stayed in Oct 2017 by Black Lake would have been difficult for an off-road trailer. You'd be coming down this while navigating between trees, in the dark:

    I can also imagine scenarios where the trailer might jack-knife down a slope sideways and cause your truck to roll.
