    Hello,

Looking to buy my first Tacoma. Can't afford brand so thinking about 2015 or 2016. I prefer the access cab, but they are hard to find in my location.
I heard about transmission problems with the 2016 and plus that is the first year of the new design. I leaning towards the 2015, a little cheaper and being the last year of the third generation, most of the bugs have been worked out.

Wondering what your thoughts are on either year?

    Thanks for the input

    Welcome!

Love my 2nd gen Access Cab. Personally, I would recommend getting a 14-15 if you can find one. As you said, proven design with all the bugs worked out.

If you’re looking for a 6 cyl, I’d say the 2015 has the more proven engine. If a 4 cyl, I’d say 2016, but I’m biased.

If you're tall I'd recommend the 2nd gen. I'm 6'1" and I passed on a 2017 because my head was too close to the ceiling. Tacoma seats don't have any height adjustment. I'm happy with the 2015 I got.

    Holy batman, Same setup!

and OP, both generations are both great platforms, test drive both and see what you prefer long term. There's nothing worse then having regret on such a large purchase!

Welcome to TW. Personally, I never buy the 1st year of a major model change. I also like my 2nd gen over 3rd gen. Went to trade my truck in, drove a brand new 2016 and said I will keep mine forever. Maybe it was the one I drove, but I felt it was not for me. Glad I kept my truck.

3rd gen for safety features alone.

From my shopping around a 2016 isn’t much more expensive than a 2015. I would say drive them both, even a couple different trucks of each year, and go with what you like best. The 3rd gens do have much more up to date safety features and more modern interior. Just depends what is important to you.

If you want an auto transmission get the 2015, the 2016 auto tranny and engine is a disaster.
