I live in the greater Seattle area and over the weekend Western Washington got quite a lot of wind. Saturday morning at 1:30am we lost power. When we finally rolled outta bed I checked online with PSE, and they had no expected time for it to be back on. Some smaller outages weren't even expected to be up til at least Monday.

With that, the wife and I decided to move all our frozen meat (quite a few pounds of family raised beef) and other stuff out to our Dometic CFX 75DZW. Set it down to zero degrees and loaded it up. Also put out our 100W Flexopower solar panel to soak up whatever little sun was making it through the clouds.

The power came back on at 4:15pm, so it was only out for a lil shy of 15 hours, but it sure was nice knowing that even without the power, we wouldn't have lost much.

I can't say enough how handy the fridge has been. Easily more so than the AT Habitat on the truck (which we also love). Whether it be Dometic, ARB, National Luna or whatever, they are a seriously great investment.

Now I just need to remember to move it all back tonight after work :)

Sweet nice to see it worked out. One of these is great to have, as well. It’ll run a fridge and freezer.

We were all set to buy one to go with us camping, but finally went with the Solar after I did some math on the generator's output and Battery recharge rates. After this though... we are back to thinking about picking one up for additional backup power if we will be out for a long period of time and backup power for the important stuff at home.

Love those Honda generators. SOOOO quiet.

Yeah, they’re great and portable too and you can jump start a truck if needed. If it’s snowing or raining, solar’s not so good.

Yeah you could recharge the battery, I think there’s an adapter where you can jump start straight from the generator, too

Do they make a generator that is quiet like the Honda but does not cost as much?

As far as I know, there is not. It's a trade off, cheaper brings more decibels. I was keeping an eye out for a lightly used Honda 2000 on craigslist for awhile before I decided to go with the solar and I often saw them for 700. Called someone on one for 600, but I just missed it.

Costco has a yamaha that looks very similar and is less expensive. Not sure how they compare

From a quick search just now:
"According to the manufacturer specs, at 25% load the Yamaha EF2000IS takes the prize producing only 51.5 dB compared to the Honda EU2000I’s 53 dB. However at 100% load, the results are reversed. The Honda EU2000I edges the Yamaha EF2000IS 59 dB to 61 dB. "

Not sure if the EF2000IS is the one you saw at costco?

If you're married, buy your wife a prius and slap a 1kw inverter on the battery if the power goes out.

    Quiet and pretty efficient generator

I'm unsure of the model. Searching that model it looks the same and if I recall correctly it was in $800-900 range so I'd guess thats the one. If I recall the Hondas run much higher in cost. I was thinking about getting one for woods and my house. Both seem much quieter than the durostar open engine generator I have.

I highly doubt you could go wrong with either. But yeah, the honda lists a couple hundred dollars more. Looks like ebay has some decent deals on them. 899 and free shipping on the EU2200i.

2 dB isn’t even worth thinking about.

Quick search shows 10 db gives a perceived 2x "loudness", and 14-20% increase for the 2 db listed. I would think that would be noticeable. Though i'm sure it's still pretty quiet for a generator.

for 2db you can just make a generator enclosure to muffle the noise, protect generator from elements, and keep it out of sight from unscrupulous folks
