What rating of tire should I be looking for?

    If you off-road, carry heavy loads, and/or tow, you want to consider E rated tires. Keep in mind they average 50lbs each and will effect mileage.

    I don't tow or off road much but I'd like in the coming year. That is why I got my Taco after all. So what would be a good rating for a part-time off Roader?

    E-rated tires are safer to air down, although I have air down on C-rated tires before with no issues. C-rated may be your ticket if you will only be doing light off-roading.

    Do not do a P rated tire if you're going to be doing any off roading

    C rated is fine if you mostly just want to hit fire roads and 2WD trails

    E rated if you want to get into the harder 4x4 stuff.

    P rated should not even be considered. D ride rough and E are like riding on bricks.

    C load work fine offroad and are like fluffy clouds compared to Es. Only go with D if the tire you want is not offered in a C.

    P-rated tires are more for on road comfort and performance. Go with a LT tire in a C or D load rating but you may not have a choice depending on the tire size or manufacturer. D load rating are too stiff for a Tacoma, more appropriate for full size trucks.

    I have E rated duratrax and although I really like the tire- it’s a bit of a rough ride. ( you really feel every crack and bump in the road.) also took a huge fuel economy loss.

    On a lightweight Tacoma a "P" rated tire is all that is really needed, and unless you want an aggressive tire only sold in an LT tire I'd save my money and buy "P"'s. But other than cost there are very few downsides to going to an "E" rated tire. They are tougher, especially in the sidewalls and that might make a difference off road. The ride CAN be rougher, but "E" rated tires need less air pressure to give the same performance. I used to run 38-40 PSI in my "P" rated tires. On the ride home after having "E" tires installed the ride was stiff. I checked air pressure when I got home and it was at 50 PSI. After experimenting I settled on 35 PSI and the ride is no different than the older "P" tires.

    I wouldn't advise "C" rated tires. While they have an LT stamped on them their payload is LESS than the "P"'s that came from the factory. They are intended for lightweight SUV's like Wranglers that don't carry any loads at all. If going to an LT in a Tacoma buy a "D" or "E" rated tire. The "D" rated tires have the same payload as "P" rated tires.

    I've been buying tires since the 1970's. I've had all of them and never once noted any difference in fuel mileage when going to a HEAVIER tire. The "E" rated tires currently on my Tacoma give me exactly the same fuel mileage that I got before. I have noted a decrease in fuel mileage and ride quality in the past when going to a more aggressive tread. If you stay away from the aggressive mud tires and get an AT tire in an "E" rating the ride will be fine and you'll not lose any fuel mileage. Put some aggressive tractor type tires on there and it'll ride rough and burn more gas.

    Snug top topper, OEM roof racks, Bilstein 4600 shocks.
    I had P rated Dynapros on mine and they were good all around. They were replaced with E rated LT 265 70-17 Wildpeak AT3Ws, (got a good deal on them),my mileage dropped about1-2 mpg, didn't notice any change in ride quality and I'm really happy with them. We do a fair amount of off roading and towing so the E's work for me. Mitch.

    I'm 'stumped' on the load rating. That size 'wood' require a 'chop' to the cab mount. I wood 'ax' that tire brand and search for a more comfortable tire that you can 'log' a lot of miles on along with added fuel 'shavings'.
