For snow? I think that’s only true for sand and dirt/rock. Snow you want the tires to sink and compact the snow. That’s why rally cars run such narrow tires in snow.

Ok. So will chains fit on a stock truck? Or not?

There’s different chain/cable sizes depending on the tire size. Make sure you get the appropriate size for the tire you have.

Even Cables/small chains will have an issue. reach behind your front wheel, find the UCA, then rub your hand btw the sidewall and the UCA. Just below it there is a knob that sticks out (can't remember what this part is called) that will rip the chains right off your tyre and wrap em around the axle. Or have the chains come out and rip around the outside of the tyre causing some nice battle scarring.

The trucks are not designed to have chains run on them without some modifications. Spacers at a minimum and a lift are advisable. Even then you have to be careful as the wheel can touch the plastic on a tight turn and full compression.

Just as an FYI, this is not a winter rated tyre. M & S mean all season tyres. If they do not have the snowflake on them they are not winter rated.

late to the party. glad you made it safe OP. just in case anyone finds this thread in the future, like everyone said, you'd be perfectly fine with just 4x4 assuming you drive smart. BUT if you want to make sure you don't get stopped by CalTrans/CHP, carry some snow cables/chains that fit your tires in your vehicle.

Legally, you're supposed to carry them / have some in your possession when chain controls are in effect. I've never been in a situation where CHP has checked, they usually just waive 4x4 / AWD vehicles through the check point but I'd rather have it and never need it to avoid a potential ticket/denied permission to continue.

    Chain Requirements - http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/wo.htm
    • R1: Chains are required - snow tread tires allowed.
    • R2: Chains are required on all vehicles except four wheel drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels.
    • R3: Chains are required - all vehicles - no exceptions.
    • R1 and R2 are the most common conditions. The highway is usually closed before an R3 condition is imposed.
