I grew up in Asheville. From a mtn biking standpoint, yes. Just yes. Lots of other deciding factors, as Asheville is a different mindset from the Charlotte area. My wife and I have a tendency to stick to ourselves, so that doesn’t really bother us. But something to think about. Have you spent much time up there, riding bikes or otherwise?

Any idea where’d you’d be looking/working around there?

Yeah, we're not super tied to Charlotte. The mindset sort of worries me, but CLT isn't quite what we were hoping (and that may be because of where we live). We spend several weekends a year up there riding/camping/brewery hopping.

Looks like I'd be working on the north side of town. Up 26 a bit.

Ive not spent much time up that way, but have some friends who live in the wood fin/weaverville area. From what I’ve heard Asheville is expanding that way, as far as people commuting to the city who want some more space. It used to be relatively backwoods towards weaverville, but I haven’t been up there in years, so I’m a terrible source.

Unfortunately, that also means I know next to nothing about any trails up that way. We’d always head to pisgah, or around the mills creek area and ride stuff off the parkway, kitsumah was another go to.

That’s a lot of words to offer no advice.

Weaverville is where the job would be located. Same - spend most of our time down near Pisgah

What part of Charlotte are you in? Might just be the area you are located.

The good thing about this area is that it's pretty centrally located between the mountains and the coast. 2-3hrs in either direction and you can be in the mts or at the beach.

My fiancee worked in Asheville for a number of years, she said it was a nice area but it's getting to be very expensive and very liberal.

If you don't have a family and mortgage, it will be farrrrr easier to up and move.

Between NoDa/Plaza midwood. No family, but do have a mortgage.

Just not much work in my field around here (at least, that I'm willing to do). Looking due to the uncertainty of my industry at this time.

What line of work are you in?

The area between noda and plaza midwood is straight ghetto...that might be why you dont like it

I do like my tent for the 1 time I have been able to use it. I got the 2-3 person and didn’t try my cot when I got it home. I would probably recommend the 4 person if you are using cots!
Luckily I brought a pad just in case. My cot was a little cramped.
It was nice not having to fool with a bunch of poles and such. It was a little breezy when I went and didn’t use the the tie downs, just a few stakes, and had no issues at all..

I went ahead and but the bullet! May take a little longer to process right now with the shutdown. Taking the exam in Efland gave me a membership with them and Durham, but a little extra drive for me.
After I get in the database it would be nice to get a crash course!
Probably going to order a handheld for now, but looking at a better radio to mount more permanently. I believe APRS feature is like a gps for your location? So I may look at something with that feature in a dual band, but getting pricey going there!
I didn’t study for the general, but didn’t miss it by much. Tech test i thought was easy, I would recommend looking at a few general questions and try and get it at the same time!

Asheville is a little more “crunchy”- and becoming far more touristy. Mix of everything there.

    Well done!
I've already bought a cheap handheld from Amazon and had a friend give me an hour crash course in setting it up. I'll probably stick with that for a while and see if a bigger setup is what I want.

    I didn’t go cheap like a baufang..
This one has good reviews also and decided to go middle of the road with a handheld.

Replacing everything worn, broken, and rusted.
FWIW Charlotte is great. It's the traffic that sucks. There are lots of pockets in the city. Most people haven't been to many of them. Took me a few years to find the right suburb. Noda is safer than plaza midwood, without a doubt. But they're both changing over. North tryon by new Noda brewing and W̶e̶s̶t̶ ̶C̶h̶a̶r̶l̶o̶t̶t̶e̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶T̶o̶w̶n̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶w̶i̶n̶g̶ are perhaps the sketchiest.

You haven't spent much time on W Sugar Creek or West Blvd have you? LOL

My commute sucks. I hit traffic on 85, every-mother-fucking-day, both morning and evening.

If you think Charlotte traffic sucks, so sit in rush hour traffic in Atlanta.
