I'm looking at picking this up but had a quick question since it has 2 AV ports.

I know that to do a f/r back up camera and always on with the stock head unit you had to buy one of the kits from the guys on the forum, but do you have to do this with an aftermarket unit or can you set it up yourself without a switch?

    Thanks

If you use an aftermarket radio the only thing you have to do is integrate the OEM camera with the proper voltage and power it off accessory & you get an anytime camera.

I have heard a lot of OEM cameras are 6 volts, but aftermarket cameras are often 12 volts. So there ya go!

In my build thread I talk about camera integration a little, but I replaced the OEM backup camera with a 12v.

I actually snooped your build already:cheers:

Im just trying to find the best way to set it up, I have one of the any time camera kits in the garage and dont really want to replace the stock camera. Mainly because Im lazy and dont feel like running more wire

You can use a voltage regulator for the camera off the accessory wire. Voltage regulator has a 12v input, ground, and 6v output for the camera. The only wiring difference between my camera and the OEM is that I didn't have to use the voltage regulator or the harness adapter.

And yours still turns on when you back up and when you open it up while driving without a switch to give it power? So no issues or have it randomly coming on when your driving?

There is a reverse wire in my factory harness so the radio can trigger the camera.

    I'll elaborate.
He didn't really read the original post so he's answering a question you didn't ask.

It's hard to know where to star to tell you what you want to know because I can't tell what you already know...
    • Since my camera is powered by the Accessory power circuit in the Tacoma it is on whenever the key is not turned off.
    • There is a wire in the truck that the OEM radio uses to sense when the car goes into reverse so it can automatically switch the video source to the camera.
    • I don't know if the OEM camera is powered when the car is not in reverse.
    • You can choose how you power your camera. At the very least you want it powered when the truck is in reverse, but you could also have a switch to power it when not in reverse or you can just do what I did.
    • If I want to switch to the camera while driving I just select "Camera View" as the source or hold the Map button.
    • My camera never randomly turns on or hijacks my radio screen.
    • The Accessory power circuit is the red wire in the Maestro RR harness. It should be on the 3-pin power plug for the RR module with yellow and black.

You didn't elaborate at all... OP asked many questions in one.

Hi Reptar, how did the install go with the 2440? I was considering that head unit but was told by crutchfields that it can not utilize - even with an adapter - the stock sat radio antenna, can you verify? thank you

I havent yet. I didnt even focus on it though because I dont use sat radio and wont be using the stock gps. I was just going to rip out the internals of the fin antenna and use it as a cable pass through.

A voltage regulator is not necessary. I have been supplying 12 volts to the backup OE camera for years with my 8000NEX Pioneer headunit and the system is working just fine. The cameras being utilized by the 3rd gens should be no different than the 2nd gen backup cams.
