I’m looking at trading my 2nd gen SR5 on a 3rd gen TRD off road. The dealer will add wheels but is believes I need to add flares. I don’t want aftermarket flares because I like the black stock flare that comes on the off road with the cement color I want.

Dealer currently outfits custom trucks with 3 inch front 2 inch rear lift with 18 inch wheels wrapped in 285 tires. I’m thinking I don’t need all that much but still want more than just stock.

My question is this: if I got with a 17x8.5 wheel and wrap it in 265/70 ridge or terra grapplers, will my tires be beyond the fender or to the edge? State laws around here (Pa and MD) require the tread be covered by the fender. I don’t want to purchase this and then need flares. I may add a leveling kit to it as well (give room to prevent rubbing up front).

    Suggestions?

Get sliders, they make wide wheels and tires look less wide. DOT officer told me, flares are a must when running tires that stick out past the wheel well. I've never seen flares that actually cover the entire tire.

If I was running wide tires/negative offset wheels. Id keep a spare set for inspetion.

That’s part of my question I guess. What would be the offset that would make this size work? I’m hearing between 0-25mm would be where I need to be on that size.

Is that correct or any recommendations?

    For a 8.5 rim width....

You need +6mm or less to maintain a backspace of 5" or less; OEM backspace is 5"
If you plan on lifting, I suggest a backspace of 4.5" or less.
    -6mm gets you 4.5" backspace.

+6mm, tire will stick out 1-1/8".
    0mm, 1-3/8"
    -6mm, 1-5/8"
    -12mm, 1-7/8"
    ...and so on.

Great info! Sounds like I need to to be on the positive end a little further to keep them under the flares but keep the wide stance.

16x8 with 0 offset. 8.5 with 0 offset would stick out .25 inches more. Shifts the center of the wheel. Also have 265 wide tires.

I guess an 8.5 inch wide wheel would move it out another half inch.

Lift, wheel and tire with alignment is 3100. That’s was for a 3 to 2 on 285/70/18. Thinking I might want a 2-1 on 265/70/17 instead.
