So this build thread started with bittersweet realization. Shortly after getting married, my wife and I started talking about having kids in the future! As exciting as that is, I started thinking to myself that I can’t fit a car seat in my 2000 xtra cab, or my 94 xtra cab pickup. I realized at that point one of them had to go, and since the 94 was my first car and has such high sentimental value to me the choice was clear, my 2000 has to go. So I started thinking... “I have so much time, and money into my Tacoma, I should get a double cab, and swap what I can off the 2000”

    And so the search began....

After about 2 weeks of asking questions, and searching nationwide, I finally found the perfect truck for the right price. I found a 2004 double cab for sale at a Honda dealership in Cincinnati, Ohio. It only had 144k on it for just over 10k

After some back and forth with the dealer, the credit union, and my wife... I decided to pull the trigger on it and fly to Cincinnati to go get it.

That's a nice looking double cab. I'm looking forward to seeing the changes as you transfer over your parts from the 2000.

Me too!!!! It’s gonna be a shit ton of work. Front and rear bumpers, the whole suspension, supercharger and 7th injector kit. The headers, cat back exhaust, 4.56 diffs and rebuilt 5 speed are staying with the 2000

So I got the truck to work today. Se had a hesitation at W.O.T on the trip back from Cincinnati. Found the used car tech who did the tune up and plug wires failed to install cyl#4 plug wire fully, and the plug wire wasn’t installed correctly into coil #3. Since I did plug wires 6 months ago in the 2000, I decided to swap plug wires, and clean the MAF and throttle body. Then I lifted it and found this...

Most people would be pissed about this. But being a Toyota tech who did his research before purchasing the truck, I knew the truck was still in coverage for the frame CSP. Talked with my assistant service manager and warranty clerk, and the gave me the go ahead to order the frame. I’ll start the repair order tomorrow and order parts.

Also did the grey wire mod and 2low mod

And trust me, the frame replacement will be well documented

Wow very nice! So funny, I too was also searching nationwide for a double cab TRD 4x4 and ended up getting the same color truck with cab and all as you.

Would be very interested in learning more about the frame CSP and how to find out if my truck is still under warranty bc I might have so that issues also. Any help or pointers on what to tell me dealership would be much appreciated.

Really looking forward to your build!

So I’ve started with some small stuff. I swapped my scangauge over and added the x-codes for auto trans temp, and my iPod interface. I also installed some weathertech floor mats.

And I finally got the wife’s approval to buy some upgrades. The muffler was completely rusted out and hollow. I convinced the wife to let me buy a new exhaust.7F014088-9ECF-444A-9E4A-25713981E6BE.jpg

As you can see, the muffler was doing such a great job.

I’m super happy with the magnaflow cat-back kit. I have the same kit on my 2000, so choosing a cat-back for the double cab was a no brainer.

@tacofor4 it all depends on your trucks D.O.F.U. (Date of first use). A VIN inquiry at the dealer would determine if your truck was eligible

So last week I found that the radiator in Deadpool was leaking. I figured I needed to address that pretty soon. I mulled over my options and decided to pull the radiator from my 2000, as it was only 6 months old and it was a champion aluminum radiatorA8539B11-9BCF-4078-BBB7-45868674FD43.jpg
Lucky for me and my pack rat tendencies, I still had the stock radiator and fan shroud for the 2000. 6B674AF1-DC62-4EC3-A526-8D04675A07BD.jpg
One issue I’ve had with the Tacoma champion radiator swap is that they were using radiators for 2wd tacoma’s, as champion doesn’t make a 4x4 radiator... but they do make a radiator for 3rd gen 4Runner, which is larger than 5speed Tacoma, and the same size as a auto Tacoma. 4FD76ABE-116D-488A-B116-992FE47407ED.jpg
The other area I lucked out, Deadpool had the standard orange hub fan clutch...

    38FF68D5-5F57-468F-B06F-81685966D160.jpg
But the green Tacoma had the green hub heavy duty fan clutch, so I swapped that as well as my URD 170 degree thermostat C9C631A8-525F-495A-B5F9-D133B2EE7FBF.jpg

All done!!!! Champion 3 row 4Runner aluminum radiator, green hub heavy duty fan clutch, URD 170 degree thermostat, and my TRD 1.3 bar radiator cap

Great work so far. It’s so nice when you can swap parts from an old build to a new one.

@boostedka its been great, and a curse too. It’s great that I won’t have to buy all this stuff again, and I have a well built truck when I’m done. It sucks cause it’s double the work, and I have to remember the 2000 has to go back together too when it’s all done

Had some downtime at work today, so in installed my new map light assembly. I got one from a 90’s pickup/T100/Tacoma/4Runner with the door switch on it. I also swapped my budbuilt skid plate.2BFB28FA-EE5D-437E-824B-1FA228BB03C9.jpgUnfortunately the color doesn’t quite match, but I’ll address that later

And this got delivered to my dealership today!!!!! (Mine is on top)

    Update!!!

I’ll be starting the frame replacement in a little over a week and could not be more excited!!!!! But with the good news comes the bad news. After a long discussion with my wife, I’ve decided to sell the green 2000 as is and not swap all my suspension, armor, or supercharger. Apparently trying to buy a house brings a build to a grinding fucking hault. Progress will be slow from here on out, but I know exactly what to do based on trial and error from the 2000

For those interested, the for sale post for the 2000

Finally got started on the frame today!!!!!!!! Was supposed to start it yesterday afternoon, but work of course screwed that up.

I would have gotten farther, but struggles with our piece of shit a/c machine hindered my progress. Will post more photos on Monday, when the engine work starts!

Ok so I got caught up with the frame replacement, and didn’t post every day... but that doesn’t mean I didn’t take photos!!! Hope everyone is ready for the photo dump!

I stopped taking photos after this point cause I was really trying to finish it. I replaced the last part I was waiting for this morning, which was the a/c belt pulley. During the frame replacement, I resealed all the oil seals on the engine, replaced the oil pump, timing belt, motor mounts, trans mount, all cab mounts, and the rear shocks. I drove it home for the first time today and couldn’t be more thrilled!!!! Hopefully there’s more to come soon!!!!

So it’s been a week since I finished the frame and I couldn’t be happier. I finally broke down and bought a scangauge mount from paranoid fabrication. Should’ve done that sooner!

So back in February, I got extremely lucky, a truck got traded in at my dealership with a supercharger on it. It was a well worked 2001 xtra cab with just shy of 200k and a caves in bedside. When sales decided to send it to auction, I asked if I could swap the supercharger for a stock intake and they agreed!!! I got a free supercharger and was ready to put it on my truck until my wife put the brakes on that idea. But after 2 months of poking and prodding, she finally let me do it as an early birthday present!!!!!9301B855-D53E-4BA5-8BD6-F33F695FD41A.jpg
