I have a V4 2018 SR5. I have not had a truck before and missed a few things when I bought it. One is a hitch (the other is V6 but at tleast I am saving gas.) My friends family are telling it will 4-5 hundred to get one put on. I looked on line and it does not look that hard to do it myself. I am looking for advice on brand, type, and whether I should just have someone do it so it's done right. I just bought 40 acres and house in the Binghamton NY area and would be looking to use it to tow a trailer - we may get a boat but as of now so I can go buy myself a tractor and some ATVs off craiglist and be able to go get them home. I may buy them on Long Island and tow them up there if I find them cheap enough here. My house is at the end of a 1800' dirt driveway with a decent size incline at parts. Let me know if there is anything else I need to add.

Get a curt hitch. I've worked with its brand for my entire career, no issues.

There's two choices for the Class 3, but I would stick to 6000LBs.

https://www.curtmfg.com/part/13264 Suuuuuuuuuper easy to install, I'd say a 3/10 only due to weight with install.

You'll need trailer wiring based on the trailer you buy, so a 4 pin (just lights) or 7 pin (lights and trailer brake).

Most people tend to say around 2500lbs you should use trailer brakes, especially with a lighter tacoma.

Thank you. I have seen the curt and draw tite on the web. e Trailer says draw tite is easier to install because of the positioning of the bolt holes. Do you know anything about that? The explanation for the wiring was very helpful. I was wondering the difference. I saw the bible thread. I will read it. Thanks!

Now I am reading the bible link and have some questions:
    1. Am I correct in assuming I do not need to mess with a transmission cooler or whatever TSB is? As of now I only plan occasional towing as described above.
    2. If I am just installing the hitch now should I just get a 7 pin wiring for any future brake controller? Can you just not use the extra pins if you don't have brake controller? After reading further - I see the brake controller gets installed in the cab so it does not work the way I thought it did.
    4. Or is all of this other stuff irrelevant because I have a 4 cyl and can't carry enough to need any of this (which I think is the case)
    5. Also there is a blank or plug whatever it is called next to my license plate. Is that realted to towing wiring?

Your friends and family all bought their trailer hitch from the dealer, which has an up the arse markup policy. They cost ~$100-150.

    Also, WTF is a "V4"? Ain't no Vee on a 2TR.

Oh sorry - I got ahead of myself with the V from V6. I guess I had only had half my coffee. - I know there is no v.

Yes after looking at the cost i figured the installers were charging way too much, which is why I am not bringing it there.
