No you do not have to totally remove it, its hard telling what was done to your truck though, best thing you can do is remove the door panel as it only takes about 5 minutes.

Seriously, at least 6 different people saying take off the panel. Take it off and post a picture and we'll be able to tell you. Look for this "hole" they drilled too as that sounds strange (unless it was holes in the bracket).

OK I will order the panel removal tool and take it off myself.

Also, I don't remember seeing that piece of water plastic shield when I last saw the door panel off. If that is the issue (the installer removed it and didn't say anything), how costly of a repair would that be? He may have taken it off all the panels for all I know.

My advice is if you don't see it on the first one, remove the other and check it out. You might be right about that.

I reckon it's cheap money if you went to a boneyard.

If the plastic sheeting is missing, take it to the dealer and have them replace it then take the bill to Best Buy and have them reimburse you.

Roughly what kind of bill do you think it would be to replace the plastic sheets?

No idea, probably a couple hundred bucks. First you need to determine if in fact they are missing, then you need to call the store manager at Best Buy.

My prediction is the dealer will do nothing but take your money, blaming any issue on the install. This is because the doors have been open and modified (as inconsequential as that should be) by parties unknown. Unless you are really really lucky.

If you insist on having others muck with it, and Best Buy doesn't correct it either, you might visit a couple of high end shops and see what they'd charge to investigate and estimate a repair.

I'd suggest hitting a scrapyard. Can't be that expensive there, and they just stick right on.

You can do it yourself with any type of plastic sheeting and butyl rubber. I ripped mine off when I did a deadener install. Put down a butyl sheet (noico), plugged seams with butyl tape and some plastic then threw down some mass loaded vinyl.

Taking out the sound dampening effect, you could just put down a plastic sheet and hold it in with butyl tape (which is what the factory does). https://www.amazon.com/Sealant-PROM...rds=butyl&qid=1548118306&s=Automotive&sr=1-19

You also could just throw a sheet of something like this over the door panel and you would get some sound dampening effect (mainly just control vibrations) while also providing a water barrier. https://www.amazon.com/Noico-deaden...id=1548118492&s=Automotive&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1

Don't need 36 sq feet like that link provides unless you do all four doors.

Do I need to disconnect the battery to open the door panel?

The installer didn't when he took off the door.

Get some mlv and noico and use this as an opportunity to soundproof the doors. Mlv is a great vapor barrier

Nope, just take it off, should only take about 5 minutes.

Is very easy to remove the door panels. I have removed mines a least four times. You can use a small flat head screw driver if you don't have the panel removal tool. Just watch some videos in YouTube of how to remove the panel. And if the plastic barrier is missing. Like others have suggested it might be a good opportunity to apply noico soundproof. It might be cheaper and better.

    Nope.

As an aside, power or manual windows?

Sounds like you might have solved your issue OP. Honestly I didn’t even think to mention the plastic seal. Reason being is during a normal speaker swap there isn’t a need to remove the film. Did you add a amplifier to the speakers? If so maybe the ran new wires into the doors and took that off to fish the wires. If so they should of replaced it before reinstalling the door panel. If you’re sure it wasn’t that, that certainly would be the cause.

As for getting a replacement from the dealer, they probably wouldn’t be able to order one. And if they did it would be entirely overpriced. Like others already stated; order a roll of film and some butyl rubber. That’s how the dealer would repair it. Or take it back to Best Buy and make them repair it.

It was just a normal speaker swap. No amplifier installed. I can't recall if I saw the water shield there or not when the door was last popped off. When it gets above freezing out, I will pop off the door and post pictures.

I figure if I take it to the dealer I am just going to lose my money.

In addition to the plastic, there is also a foam shield that could have gotten knocked loose when they put it all back together. It might have gotten knocked at an angle that is channeling the water.
