Planning on hunting in Montana this year, for those of you hunting in bear territory what side arm do you carry? or is it not something I need to worry about?

Grizzlys are to be worried about...I'd say at least a 357. but you arent going to get much of a shot if one comes up on you quick. Not common but if you get a kill down and are packing out meat, chances are you might have a grizzly find your kill and come claim it..;)

I live in, and hike, hunt, fish, etc. in black bear and grizzly bear territory all year. I've had three family friends attacked by bears in the past five or so years. Two by grizz and one by black. None of them said they had any chance to get out bear spray or a handgun in the split second it took for them to see the bears before they were being attacked. It happens way faster than most people realize. So from a realistic view, its probably better to make some noise and keep one person on bear watch while field dressing and packing out a kill.

But personally, I'd still keep a handgun on me just to feel safer. And something big, like a 357 or .44 mag.

Looking at picking up a Ruger Redhawk .44 mag for some sense of security.

I’d certainly feel safer if I had a sidearm with me. Although when you’re in a group I’d say its more likely you’d end up using it to shoot a bear attacking your partner than one attacking yourself haha

In 44 mag? Shoot good? They look like good guns. I don’t really sell guns once I buy them.

yes .44 mag. 5in barrel. think i still have the recipe using W296.it was a hot load with hardcast lead bullet. love my S&W but wouldnt shoot it in them. they tend to shoot loose with hot loads.the Ruger shot good.and is bulletproof tough.
