I'm the same way and see it both ways. I feel like pulling the 3rd is a good way to play it safe but you raise a good point about the residual gear oil potentially catching fire. Though after a quick searching on ih8mud it looks like it'll just smoke but not actually catch. I would just hate to cause an expensive repair if I manage to fuck up my gears somehow with too much heat.

Up to you, but no way in hell was I going to pull my third just for that. Lol

Yup, if I remotely thought that the third could be damaged by this, I would have welded this while I had the third out last week.
But, if it worries you, I would do it the way that will give you piece of mind. ;)

This is one of those things !!

When your welding on your equipment one does what you think is best.

When I get paid to weld every safety precaution is followed because if something gets damaged I am buying a new one .

So every job is bid that way

Just a follow up on the benchmark abrasives flap discs.

So far they've been hanging in pretty good, mainly been using them for deburring cut offs from my abrasive chop saw. Still on my first 40 grit wheel have about a months worth use on it welding 2-3 times a week.

That's the only thing I run now. Just make sure you use a guard because I have had a couple break on me if my grinder gets snagged and bucks back, but who's to say that wouldn't happen with other discs.

Seems to happen more with them then Other brands. Although you cant beat the price I use the shit out of them.
Without a guard but defense is key. Wear your safety gear.

Yeah I always wear my ppe when working. Too many close calls for me not to. Was using a flap disc and it slipped and got my hand, tore through the glove and took a little skin off. Without the glove it woulda been a different story.
