    It depends...
If your paying $79.95-120.00 at the dealer than it's every 5k. But if it's free, then its every 10k.
I do my own every 5k miles so for me it's $37.95 or $75.90 every 10k with tax title & license.

Owners manual will tell you EXACTLY how to care for your expensive new vehicle. There are some like me however that will change out every 5k just because we have OCD.

Op, yes every 10k, check your oil periodically and make a judgment call. If it looks like garbage at 5, 6, or 7k, then chg the oil. Manufacturer calls for every 10k. Many of us here do it at 5k because we love our toys.
    Happy offroading.

Only an oil analysis would indicate the ability of the oil to do its job.

Let me simplify this. Use the kublin method. Throw this out if you drive in dusty conditions and go to 5k mile ocis.

So let’s gets some constants. Mobil 1 0w20 AFE has a TBN of 8.8. A good premium TBN for an ILSAC oil
The 2gr fks. I estimate 212 cubic inches, probably a couple less with rounding. And 278 hp
    Oil capacity 6.2.
Then you just need to track fuel consumption. Let’s say we average. 19 mpg

    So 8.8x10=88x6.2x (.76)(19)=OCI
=7,878 to deplete oil averaging 19 mpg
    I will simplify it further.
    Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 in 3.5 liter Tacoma OCI = 414.656xmpg
If you use another oil figure the constant by the new oil TBN.

The most ideal condition, averaging 24 mpg over the OCI, could yield a 10k OCI. Be honest about your mpg. Over the OCI. But that would be rare.

if you have a 3rd gen tacoma and in 5,000 miles your oil is black, i think there is something wrong

All oil looks black when drained after use. Even if it looks clean in the dipstick. The thicker the film you view the darker it appears.
Oil color has little to do with serviceability.

Looks have absolutely nothing to do with oil quality (well they can be related I suppose if you left it in there for like 30k but normally not correlated). That said 10k is just WAY too long to go between changes [enter oil analysis clan here] and if you do go that long be sure you're checking the level periodically.

I think the 10k interval was just a way for Toyota to cut costs for offering Toyota care. After all, the engine will certainly last 60k at this interval and after that they're off the hook. But that "free maintenance plan" sure has a nice ring to it doesn't it???

I'm a 5ker, oil isnt that expensive and if you do still have toyota care, you only pay out of pocket every other change.. not bad

Exactly. One can speculate and read opinions all day but oil analysis is the only way to really see if your change intervals are correct.

when i changed my oil at 5k, 15k and 25k, it was not black......darker than new oil yes, but not black......the dealer changed of free at 10k, and 20k.....so i have had 5k changes for almost 30k......not sure about the black color addressed here....my experience does not support black oil in 5k on a 3rd gen

Mine is black When I drain it with5k. No translucence in a clear 16 oz bottle in bright sunlight black.
I find the 2grfks fouls the oil color faster than the 1gr fks. Could be then unknown soot factor. I do a lot of runs where milage drops below 17 mpg due to speed.

Contrary to popular belief oil being black is not an indication it needs changing. Some Mobil 1 oils are good to 15k. It's all the stuff bolted onto the engine that will fail before the motor does these days.

Yes your OCI is linked to the amount t of fuel you burn. Driving conditions that burns more fuel per mile shortens the life of the oil in the sump.

I abhor general statements that say an oil is good for xxx miles or a vehicle is good for xxx mile oil changes. Because they are dishonest and marketing based numbers that are founded upon the best of conditions most of us do not always drive in perfect scenario.
To me ideal is to start the vehicle and drive at a leisurely 45-55 mph without stops 30 or more miles to a destination on every trip.

Now let’s try a full SAPS oil
Same as above but using Mobil 1 0w40 12.6 TBN
    19 mpg
    Constant with M1 0w40
Is 593.712 so multiply that times an overall average of 19 mpg is 11,280 miles.

The fact is the factory recommendation is “serviceable” but not optimal. As the TAN grows and the TBN shrinks corrosion begins. During the service life many people following toyota care could be driving 20% of the time with oil that is No longer neutralizing acids adequately.
It will not appear as a problem in normal budget Blackstone UOAs and it will not be a problem for most new owners who trade before 7-10 years. It’s a problem for us that are OCD and like optimization.
