Code reader HELP!

    I have an 03 w/3.4L. Went to start and would crank but that’s it.So was going to buy a code reader (Harbor freight) but wanted some input as to which one would be the best for me. Also have a 2011 Genesis that I would like to use it with. Any recommendations>

    I have no experience with the Readers Harbor Fright sells

    I got the cheapest HF had and like any cheap reader it shows the codes, ready status and you can reset the code. Simple basics.

    Later I got on sale their more expensice one (Cen-Tech 60694) with graplical LCD that reads live data and freze frame data. If I remember correctly it was around 80 dollars (they had it on crazy sale an I had 25% coupon)

    for purposes of diagnosing your crank but no start condition a code reader isnt going to help much, the diagnostics in your Tacoma are not that sophisticated, your other vehicle, maybe. As to your question about code readers/diagnostic readers there is no "one ring to rule them all" reader out there. It is a very tough thing to recommend because as soon as you buy one, the ABS light pops on and the bargain reader you just bought doesnt do ABS or it doesnt reset the maintainenace light on the other vehicle etc. I have presently 3 readers, BlueDriver is the first and is my "go to" tool. Small, Bluetooth communication and when linked to my iPad 1st gen I can drive down the road and actually see the screen because of its physical size. Good enough for 90% of the diagnostics. I have a Snap On Solus Pro V with all the adaptors, personalilty keys, etc. much more sophisticated tool, well worth the $2k I spent on it but it has become obsolete, the third one is an off brand scope that I rarely use, small screen but when I need to see wave forms I break it out. In my opinion and for the money, $99, BlueDriver is the way to go.
