Hello all! Long time lurker, new poster. Quick question - going to be a best guess if anything but thought I would throw it out. Do ya'll think that Apple CarPlay will be able to be retrofitted on at least the 3rd gen Taco's once it is rolled out to more of the models? Is it hardware or just a software download? Curious as to what the thoughts/rumors are going around right now.

In for recommendations on the best wireless CarPlay headunit that retains steering wheel controls and doesn’t cost a small fortune.

I’m curious myself. This would be a great mod.

I went with an Alpine ilx-107 and iDatalink Maestro ADS-MRR. Total cost with everything required was $880. This unit is a barebones unit with no XM, no built in nav, no CD/DVD, etc. You basically have to use CarPlay to get all the features you are looking for which is fine with me because it supports wireless carplay. This install keeps all steering wheel controls, car settings, center display (minus nav updates), USB, and OBD data. Make sure you get the GPS adapter to adapt the headunit to the trucks built in antenna (iDataLink Maestro ACC-SAT-T02).

The headunit also drives the speakers way better then the stock head unit did, audio overall sounds much better. Sometimes carplay freaks out but only once in awhile and restarting your phone usually fixes any weirdness.

Awesome info thank you. Did you do the install yourself? If so how was it?

Yes I did. Crutchfield can build your harness for you for a few bucks and then its 100% plug and play. I did that part myself using solder, took about an hour to install including building the harness.

I did a similar upgrade in my RAV4 (2016 SE) before I got my Taco. I too used Crutchfield and had them build the harness. Very straightforward and they have tech support on the weekends so you can talk to someone to help with the install if needed. I would do this again in the Tacoma if it weren't for all of the other upgrades I want (need?) to do first. :)

I have been thinking of going aftermarket for apply CarPlay, had it in my silverado and that’s the main thing I am missing from that truck.
