What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

It was about -20. Mine runs no hotter than 186-190 ever! 200+ doesn't seem right lol

 

Lots run around 205-210. Not bad if that's the case. When you put a new thermostat in and radiator it usually goes back to 185-195 range.

 

Could be why mine runs cooler, newer radiator and thermostat. Learn new stuff daily.

Yep this is true. Just changed my radiator and thermostat last week. Temps were around 200-210 before with the jiggle valve at 12. I installed the new thermostat with the valve at 6 o'clock and now my temps are 184-190 according to my scangauge.

 

Not the case with mine.

Dammit. The shop that rebuilt my engine should know this... I guess I can check the thermostat when I flush the coolant in a few months. Anyone have a photo of the proper alignment on the 5VZ? <-- Nevermind. I found it in the service manual... And found this post.

 

Anyone know why my e-brake light would turn on during acceleration? It’s -12 degrees here so I was thinking maybe something froze but I’ve had this happen before and just ignored it until it went away

 

Probably the cable frozen in one of the guides somewhere. Accelerating causes the axle to rotate some and could put tension on the cable, enough to cause the light to flicker on maybe.

That or there's a loose wire or something under the dash.

You won't be sorry. I have a 25 or 30 yr old Hobart Handler 150 and I have used the crap out of it. Awesome machine. Only replaced normal consumables so far. Many Taco projects: frame repairs; flat bed build; 2 sets of ladder racks; lot of body work.

Comments assuming yours works like mine. When I first got mine, several times it spooled wire out inside the case. My fault it turned out. Once I got the hang of adjusting the pressure on the wire when I changed sizes, it has not over spooled out wire inside. Also, make sure to reverse the drive wheel as needed when you change wire sizes. Look at the groves in the wheel and you'll see what I mean. On mine, 0.25 and 0.30 ride in one groove, and I have to reverse it for the 0.35.

 

Go info, thanks for the tips! Haven't loaded it up with wire just yet since I was setting up the cart and digging out my welding shit from various locations to try and get it all centralized.

Installed new Denso ignition coils and OEM wires today. Pretty sure my ignition coils were original with 227,000 miles on them. The engine seems to be running much smoother after swapping to the new coils. Now to replace that leaky PCV valve...

 

A lot of folks are running in the 210 range. Despite what many on here say, spinning the thermostat jiggle valve to 12 or 6 seems to make very little difference on mine. I even tried a lower temp thermostat. I think my radiator is well overdue. Just another thing on the to-do list...

 

I don’t see how you guys are running near 210, I never got over 195 when I was using my truck on the postal route, armor and all and my trans was constantly above 220 before my additional cooler but the coolant temp stayed steady.
