I have a 97 tacoma regular cab. My tailgate latch recently broke and the gate is stuck in its full upright and locked position. I can't unlatch the tailgate and lower it.

Is there any way to remove the tailgate easily in this situation? I'm probably just going to remove the gate and put up a net anyway.

Yea I think nceguy is correct, there should be a small panel held down with phillips screws. It should be reverse of the handle, remove the panel and pull the 2 rods, that will release the tailgate locks.
