Been trying to search but not finding exactly what I am looking for
    2015 SR5 DCLB 77,xxx miles, bone stock.
About 3 weeks ago I started noticing that the tyranny was shifting hard going from 4th to 5th first thing in the morning. Pull away from a stop with "normal" throttle and when I get to 40 mph I back off the throttle and the tranny shifts rather harshly into 5th. I do notice that the shift is harsh even if I dont let off the gas at 40 but not as bad.
I had the drain and fill done back in June I believe, about 6ish thousand miles ago.
Took it to the local dealer to have them look at it. They couldn't recreate the issue and had me come in to drive the truck with one of the service managers and it shifted just as it has been when it's cold. They looked at it again today and said that the fluid was a little low and topped it off but otherwise say that the shifting is considered normal.
Their thought is that the truck is starting to go into overdrive at that point when it is ready to shift and then when I let off the gas it "confuses" the computer, causing the hars shift.
Sorry if it seems as though I am babbling, just trying to make sure that I include all pertinent info.
Is this a known issue that I should push with the dealer when I go in this evening to pick the truck up?
Does anyone else have this issue?
    TIA

That shifting is not normal. The tranny holds 12 qts and a drain/fill only replaces about 3qts, however there's a specific method to getting the fluid level just right and the shop may not have done that. I assume that you were low on fluid and hopefully it will be fine now. I'd recommend either doing a full flush or a couple more drain/fills spread out over time. The drain/fill is very easy to do at home, just put back in the same amount you drained. I used a 5qt paint bucket from Lowes, a $5 gear oil pump from Walmart and Valvoline Maxlife ATF ($18 a gallon) also from Walmart. Also requires a 24mm socket and don't over tighten the drain bolt in the pan.

I got a couple of hard 4-5 shifts and 2 drain/fills resolved that. I used the Valvoline since it was readily available but have 3 gallons of Amsoil ATF ready for a full flush here soon.

My 2015 does the same thing, but only when cold. After the temp gets up to normal, it shifts fine. My 2005 shifted smooth as silk the entire time I had her.

So it was 1/2 qt low on fluid and they also reflashed the transmission computer. I guess we'll see what happens tomorrow morning.

Any luck on the transmission? I’m having the same issue with mine but only when I’m doing around 60-70mph it’ll drop down into 4th to go up a hill then shift hard back into 5th had a transmission flush done around 6 months ago now

So once the overnight temps got above freezing the hard shifting went away and I haven't had the issue since. I still think it is not correct so I may try to do another drain/refill or 2 this fall before it gets cold again and see what happens.

Mines booked in with Toyota on Monday to get the oil changed (literally cheaper to pay them to do it than me buying the stuff to do it) lol I’ll ask them to check trans fluid and do a re flash.
    Thanks for the quick reply!

Mines been doing this too. Today was especially noticeable. I recently had a drain and fill. Only 39,000 on the clock.

You still have that symptom when cold? Last night dipped to the low 20s here with a high of 26 today. Perhaps I should bring it in so they can check fluid level.

I did a drain and fill this past fall. It doesn't seem to be as bad this past few weeks that we have had some fairly cold weather.

I have a BMW128I and it shifted way clunky with 33K on odo - drained the fluid and it looked borderline metallic, silvery - wasn't low, just dirty/gross
Fresh fluid and I am approaching 100K with no further issues, though it is time to do this again just based on miles..

Mine has done it since I got it in 2010. The truck uses a different shift parameter, when cold to help the truck warm up faster. It extends the shift point a bit. This coupled with cold fluid makes for a hard shift.

I bought my truck used with 24k miles. It still had had some remaining OE warranty. I took it in, the dealer said it was normal. I was skeptical, but here I am 12 years later. Still doing it, just on really cold mornings. I’m at almost 150k now. So, I am of the opinion that it is Normal.

I'm still relatively new to my truck because I bought it used in September with 36.5k and have only really driven around town since then. Just crossed 39k today after almost 5 months lol. Today I actually drove it a lot more than normal and it seemed a lot more mild after driving it all day. Pehaps it was from being cold. Trans is silky smooth otherwise. I know the A750 transmissions are one of the most bulletproof transmissions used by Toyota so I am thinking you are right with it being a normality. I bought an extended warranty that lasts another 5 years with the truck that covers the transmission so I guess between now and then if something is really wrong, it'll be able to be fixed for a 100 dollar deductible. Frame is covered for another 5 years as well. Sometimes I am bit of a hypochondriac with possessions I'm proud of.

I can understand that. If it helps any, I tow fairly frequently.
If hard shifting was an issue (and it isn’t), you’d think mine would have given up years ago.
I’ll start worrying when mine “doesn’t” shift harder in the cold:thumbsup:

I've got a 2011 with 150k KMs and it's done it from probably 80k-ish kms. First shift from 4th-5th when it's cold just about every time. Goes away when the fluid warms up.

I've got a 2014 with 230k on it and it's rough shifting 4th to 5th all winter. I'm looking at running bigger tires 275/55 but I was worried the tyranny is weak but by the looks of this thread its normal...

Keep it in 4th gear for a few minutes until you get a little heat in the tranny

Weather has warmed up here a bit and after me driving my truck more often, I haven't had many harsh shifting since I asked my dealership to check it out. I will say 4 to 5 is more noticeable but that's probably because I pay more attention to it now.

Anyway, Im curious about your last 230k miles, how has it held up? What have you done to it? Mines only at just under 41k

Sorry should have clarified, im up in Canada so 230k kms not miles but apart from that it's still going strong. I live in northern Ontario so it's bad in the winter and I towed with this it's whole life around 3500 lbs enclosed which often can't pick between 4th and 5th rolling through the hills. I've only done one tyranny flush so I might start doing them more frequently

When you mean bad, do you mean clunky or jerky or both?

It not smooth from 4th to 5th. A clunk with a momentary hesitation. Might try running it in 4th tomorrow morning and put my scan tool on to watch my Temps try to get it up to temp before letting it see fifth gear
