I have been doing mad scientist Subaru and exotic car stuff all my life but just now finally got around to owning a Toyota truck, I have liked them since the late 70's but just never owned one. I wanted to run my first glance plan for lift and tires by those who have the direct experience with this truck. I understand of course that all mods have some compromise with increased component wear, noise, MPG etc. I just want to get a feel for how much compromise. My Baja turbo handles better with 6in lift and taller/ wider, lower profile tires. But for all I know a Tacoma might be a huge compromise to the negative like a Jeep when you throw that much lift and tire at it, although I suspect it is not. Also in the Subaru world we have no alternate gearing so we just crank up the boost, Toyota has a luxury of aftermarket options so it is a new thing to me. The mission also matters, are you commuting or trail riding every weekend.

This Tacoma will be driven in bad weather (winter snow, heavy rains) where our daily drivers are impractical and once a week or so on a 100 mile round trip commute as well as occasional trips to haul light loads. It might see some light off-roading every now and then. I don't care about mpg much. I do tend to maintain posted speed plus 10.

I am thinking of the Rough country 6 inch lift and K02 305 55 R20 tires. I like the GA640 wheels but am still browsing. For those who have run this combo or similar what were your experiences with:

    Driveline wear/vibration
Handling at highway speeds and cornering through highway ramps and such
    Braking performance
Power loss for the extra 2.5in tire height..... Did you regear? If so what ratio
Rubbing / trimming needed? Did the trimming fix the rubbing?

Do you already own the truck?

The gearing is too high for stock sized tires. With that much additional weight from the big wheels and tires, I’d bet it would hunt a lot more than it already does.

I’d recommend a ~3 inch lift using ome 888 coils with bilstein 5100s, new upper control arms and an add a leaf in the rear for roughly 3 inch lift up front and then 2ish in the rear. Compromise on tire size a little down to 285 55 20 which should fit if you use a 20x9 with 0 or slightly positive offset.
