It seems everyone in the world is concerned about improving gas mileage. I am one of those people. However stupid me decided to add a 3" lift and 33's to my truck which brought my gas mileage down from 18-19 to 15-16. After reading several threads about intakes and how people have seen improvements in their gas mileage I decided to add a TRD intake. To my dismay it actually brought my gas mileage down to around 13.5. I drive like a grandma. Mainly commute to work on residential roads and on occasions take long trips. Sure I like to give it some gas once in a while, but not all the time. I have been tracking my gas mileage for a while and it has stayed consistently at around 13.5. I had it installed at a reputable repair shop. Wondered if anyone had any thoughts.

Get smaller tires, I doubt the lift did much to hurt your milage. And get the intake off since it hurt your milage I guess?

Did you reset the computer on the truck after adding the intake (unplugging the battery for a bit)?

A TRD intake should not hurt your milage like that, sounds like something is wrong.

How long have you drivin it since it was put on? Give it a little time for the computer to recalibrate. If it is still bad in a week or two, pull the negative terminal off your battery for a few minutes to reset your computer. The installer may have not done this. It is necessary for the computer to recalibrate for the new intake. If you still have bad MPG take it in and have them look at it again.

Ya.....I know smaller tires will help...However, I like the way the look..As for the computer recalibrate I am not sure what the installer did except for install the intake. Its late.....tomorrow I will unlplug the terminal to reset the computer. Won't know what happens to the gas mileage for a couple of weeks...unless I take a good long trip. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

Larger tires make your odometer and speedo run slower. If this is not corrected, it will appear you are traveling fewer miles on a tank of gas. For example, a 10 percent increase in tire size will make the odometer show 0.9 miles for each mile traveled.

Engines typically run better with cooler air. Most of the performance intakes pull air from under the hood. I don't understand why. Seems like that would hurt the MPG. If I ever get the urge to modify mine, I will use the drop in style k&n filter in the stock housing.

Thanks for all the advice. Going to let the tank run dry and see how my mileage fairs up. Makes sense about the mileage and larger tires. I may go back to the stock air filter........Anyone want to buy an intake....ha ha.

John....have not decided if I plan on taking it off. Still need to run some test on the truck to see if it is in fact the intake causing the problems. However, if I do decide to sell I will let you know. I have had it for about 1 month. Probably put 500 miles through it. I will keep you all posted.

Damn sucks to hear all the bad experiences. I drive aggressively about 20-30 percent of the time. I have the TRD intake and exhaust, no lift, 17x9 wheels, and 265 70 17 nitto TG. I avg. over 300mi consistently thats in Reno, NV 5000 mi above sea level and back home in Texas. I never restarted the computer either.
