So my truck is starting to have issues with the paint on the roof of the cab and on the hood.

What’s the best fix for this besides the obvious of a professional repaint.

Honestly at that point it’s too late. The clear coat is completely failing and there’s really no fixing it other than getting it resprayed.

If I get it resprayed, will the paint that’s sprayed on the roof and good match with the rest of the truck? I would imagine it’s hard to blend.

It depends on the quality of the rest of the paint to determine how much blending is required.

The rest of the paint is “dull” from never being hit with a buffer. I broke out my porter cable and Menzerna compound, and tested a section and my pad became black with all the stuff that lifted off.

The paint has scratches which is expected. I think with a good two step polish, the blend could be decent.

Did you thouroughly wash and clay bar the truck prior to trying to polish?

Never polish without using a clay bar. Washing the truck is not sufficient enough to remove contaminants from the paint, so when you go to polish its embedded in the paint turning your pad into essentially dirty sand paper. You’ll cause what is called hollogramming in the paint which is polished in scratches along the car. Which you’ll have to polish even more to remove.

If your truck has gone years without a good TLC detail. I would plan a weekend to really work on it. Get yourself some Iron-X product (I use Chemical Guys Decon) and after you wash and dry the truck spray it down with this stuff really well. Let it do its magic for about 5 minutes then rinse, and do your clay bar treatment.

    Then do your polish.

If you do pay to have your truck repainted the body shop will detail the rest of the truck to blend. So I wouldn’t do it yourself on top of paying for the body shop to do it.
