went in for oil change change about 50k miles.

Get the call thinking truck is done, then service advisor tells me “all looks good, but theres carbon build up on the throttle body and injectors need cleaning.

? Carbon build up? Injector cleaning ? I thought my truck sounded like a diesal because it cleans injectors all day?

    Thoughts....

I'd respond with "If I was going to have to baby my truck with useless bullshit service for it to run I would have bought a Dodge. I plan on abusing this 'Yota like I was part of a Taliban convoy by day and a Mexican drug-running fleet by night. Oh and make sure you change the air freshener." *click*

Did my plugs at 78k and stuck my inspection cam down the cylinder and looked at the valves. Clean with normal carbon, no build up or anything just normal. Everything looked great. You can do a walnut shell cleaner at higher mileage if you have an issue. BMW does this as a service to clean.

When I picked up I asked what would cause carbon build up and he said it was the ethanol gas. I asked why would a modern motor not be protected from this. I got the thousand yard stare and He handed me my key and said have a good day.

Its entirely possible you have some carbon build up on your throttle plate and port fuel injectors (the 'cleaning' function is only for the DI injectors). However, if the truck does not have any performance issues (idle, etc.), disregard the suggestion. You can clean your throttle plate by yourself and, as mentioned above, run some Seafoam or equivalent through the gas for the port fuel injectors and valves.

Just an upsell on a dealer service. No where in the maintenance manual does it call for an injector cleaning
Top Teir fuel, Mobil-Exxon, Shell and Sunoco. 87 or 89 what ever I feel like pushing lol.

They do fill up a few ounces between oil changes. They’re highly debatable on whether they help anything, but a lot of owners use them.

They’ll help your cabin smell like oil fumes, so there’s that.

Go check NASIOC for real carbon buildup threads in the FA20DIT or any other strictly DI turbo engine. You’ll catch the oil blow by, but it doesn’t prevent buildup. Once that shit is in your valves, you’re getting your engine walnut blasted.

Different fuel or oil isn’t going to change results either. It’s a byproduct of DI and can’t really be mitigated by repeatable steps in the years I’ve owned / read about it.
