I've heard the same, anything manufactured in the last ~18 months should be up to par. I'd love to come across a JM, but probably unlikely and I'm impatient.

The thing with thick timber is, unless theres trails there you arent getting the jump on anything. Ive pushed so many elk and deer trying to get through some old skid trails, They hear you a long ways off. Ive had better luck either ambushing them or stumbling on them when they are bedded down somewhere in the open. Ive never got a shot off on any animal in the brush.

Depends on the conditions. If it's breezy, or if it's raining/snowing, pushing thick stuff can actually work really well. You just need to keep your head up and on a swivel, and be ready to line up a shot at the drop of a hat. I've gotten a couple of deer that way over the years, because they operate on VFR only during bad weather, same as us. :notsure:

Edit- And an iron sight lever gun is great for it; the ones I've shot during that sort of hunting were with a .32 Winchester 94 and the Marlin 336 in .35 that replaced it. For thick stuff you definitely need something fast handling if you're walking.
I'll admit that I like the .35 or 45-70 more than a .30-30 for thick cover, based purely on personal bias. I've tracked deer that were shot with 30-30's and ran a LONG way before they dropped. I've never tracked anything shot with a .35 or 45-70 for more than 100 yards, and most of them have dropped within 10-15 feet, which is HUGE when you're in thick stuff.

Others will disagree, and shot placement is still key, obviously. And as a disclaimer I have enough faith in the 30-30 to carry one as my truck gun during deer season. Like I said, it's just a personal bias.

yep almost all my deer in the woods were ambush. I did shoot one through a bit of brush where I could only see his head, shoulder, front leg. The biggest reason I want a 30-30 is because of the short range and my 30-06 has been overkill.

If shorter range is the goal (brush gun), maybe consider opening up the search to .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum. I have both, and both will do the trick nicely.

    DBAL, Dual Beam Aiming Laser.

Somewhat, standard (for civilian) power levels, two beams in one housing, one visible and one infrared.
Depending on the make/model they are either zeroed together or independently.

Looks cool, fairly standardized, works with pressure switches, IR laser works with NVG, and it looks cool.

So I didn't technically "buy" this, but I did buy the ticket that won it for me. Got this S&W Victory 22 from the raffle at my gun club this week. Also picked up 700 9mm rounds and 200 .45 rounds from a guy cleaning out his collection. Couldn't pass them up at only $90.20190207_205204.jpg

This model is joint zeroing. Makes it easier to get zeroed on a regular range.

    What he said. ^

Has a good beam, is robust, allows for aiming under odd positions and NODs when you can't get a good sight picture, and works well with my surefire light since I can run a dual pressure pad. There is a cool guy factor as well, but I'm not super concerned about that.
