Anyone with a newer gen Toyota truck wish they still had their first gen?

My new Toyota is the best of the 4 Toyota pickups I’ve owned. Had a 90, 94, 2003, and now a 2018, all 4x4s.

    Mostly stuff I built.
I still have my 2nd gen Hilux and now my 3rd gen Tacoma. So I’m good. Both have been unstoppable thus far.

    Also have owned:
    1969 stout MT

    1980 Hilux 4x4 MT
    1984 FJ60 MT

    2016 T4R TRD Pro

Now in the diesel department I wish I still had my 2nd gen Cummins and had never bought my 4th gen.

I'm never selling my 1st gen, but I am looking to buy an old truck. A 12-valve Cummins would be awesome!

I typically don't like red vehicles but I love the Tacoma in this red! there's a clean one that I see around town here and I always take a minute to admire it when I walk by.

I still own my 1st gen Taco. It’s a different animal all together for a different decade. I enjoy both trucks for their differences not their similarities. I’m going to sell the 01 soon just because I honestly don’t drive her as much as my 19. Still I will miss the good times and all the memories I made with my black beauty but for comfort and safety I can say that the new Tacoma is light years ahead in options. When I have have them side by side I crack up laughing at the size comparison.

I still have one of my 1st gens, have owned two along with an 86 and a 91. Everytime I take it for a spin it reminds me how much more I love my 3rd gen.

    1457986665568-955241857.jpg

My 86 was a 4 speed with no AC, no cruise control, no radio and a plastic bench seat. In 1989 I drove across the country with the windows down, a boombox and a shitload of D cell batteries having the time of my life however I vowed never to drive across Texas again.

3rd gen is my favorite but I had a lot of fun with the other trucks. I would need to be young again to enjoy those trucks like I remember.

I kind of played around with the idea of trading in my previous 2007 truck for a first gen Tundra and Tacoma several times in the past.

In the end for my purposes, it didn't make sense to trade in my truck that I was mostly happy with for something even older. Which meant more parts were likely going to need to be replaced soon and more time, effort and money would have to be put into it, etc.

Maybe if I ever came across a really clean one that I knew the full vehicle history of and it's a great price. But doubt it considering that that generation is close to fifteen years old now.

I do kind of wish that Toyota would make the trucks closer to the sizes of the first gens. I was about to say that I'm not sure about the first generation Tacoma's double cab rear legroom. But doing a quick look on Edmunds it looks like there was actually more room on the first gen than the current generation. (33.7 vs 32.6)

I can confirm that 3rd gen cabins are wider but feel shorter height wise. As for the back bench it does feel more cramped when the front seats are in the position I need them for comfort. I’m short 5’6 and my son 5’10 can’t sit me behind me in the 3rd gen. When I drive by myself it feels cavernous but if I have a passenger I’m reminded of how truly compact the 1st gen trucks are. I still like the 1st gen for driving on tight spaces and narrow street as my 3rd gen has a much bigger foot print and turning radius plus it’s much harder to gauge the front bumper location. With my 01 I can park in the city easily not so much today at the market with my 19.

I had a mint 1st gen v6 reg cab. Sweet truck but wouldn't want it back. Quick but couldn't shift it fast due to the John Deer tranny. Small, squeeky rear springs, squeeky clutch linkage, bla, bla. Fun at the time though and kinda rare with the nicer trim level? I sometimes wish I got a basic Silverado ext cab 2008'ish for $22k instead of the new taco. Good basic strong trucks that still manage about 16 mpg mixed.

My 96 was an extremely capable trail rig. The compact size allowed me to get places and maneuver through trees easier. Once I got the 05, I liked the extra room inside so much I never looked back. I had my 06 for 12 years and the paint was gone so no problem squeezing it through the branches and briars. Moved away from the sierras and things changed. I'm liking my new truck, but I miss the old ones too. Different tools for different jobs.

I miss my 03, if I could have found a clean one I would have bought another as my new (to me) taco is just my play vehicle. I like to call it the most practical mid-life crisis lol.

Still have my 2002 DCSB PreRunner and was mildly surprised with the trade-in offer I got when I bought my 2018 DCSB OR which I declined. Really don't miss it when driving my Gen 3.

I loved my 1st gen 2001 because it was so much smaller. Regular cab 4 cyl mt 4x4. Bench seat, crank windows. The only negative was you couldn’t kneel on the tailgate or it would bend. Toyota gave me $11,000 in trade with 150,000 miles on it. Wish I had it back.

That said I also enjoyed my 2011 and currently my 2016.
