    It's getting there.
I do an oil change in between my dealer freebies so with 20k on my 2016 I’m doing one.

While taking off the canister for the filter I looked inside the engine side of the housing and noticed an O ring on the stem that runs inside the paper filter when the whole thing is screwed back together. This O ring happens to match the O ring for the filter drain plug.

Did the dealer put an O ring in the wrong place when they did my last oil change? Or is there supposed to be one inside there?

Hopefully someone’s got an answer I’d like to get this back together quick.

See if you can find an exploded view of the oil filter assy. where it mates to the engine. It may show all the o-rings & gaskets, and the order they go. First idea I had, after reading your post. I'm sure someone on here knows for sure. Good luck.

At 20k your dealer should be doing your last free oil change. I haven’t done mine yet, but on my 4.0L on my 4Runner, there was two o rings I believe. Check your new kit to verify.

You’re understanding my question correctly. There was an o ring on the inner stem and the o ring that was supposed to be in the filter drain was missing.

I’m going to replace the filter with no o ring on the inner stem and my new aluminum filter assembled with the o rings in the two places that the exploded diagram calls out.

This is hard to follow. So you have no o ring on the filter housing? Yikes. Good thing you didn’t have any oil leaking.

So everyone understands I’ve uploaded a picture. There was an o ring where the arrow was pointing on the inner stem on the engine side of the assembly.
