I dunno, I kinda want less, smaller, better. You know, like a first gen, less body, less cab, less electronics, less nannies. Walked away from several dealers and bought a used 2nd get because none could figure out how to get me manual trans, trd offroad that wasn't a double cab. And i wouldn't even consider my 2nd gen to be nearly as good a truck as my first gen. Ive always been a firm believer of making the driver smarter, not the car.

 

Your thinking like an american. The rest of the world uses small trucks with small diesels. We dont want a 3/4 ton diesel in the tacoma but maybe 3.0L turbo diesel would kick ass.

 

There are a lot of reasons why almost no one offers small diesels in the USA.

 

I don't disagree that people should try to master basic technology before they can truly appreciate modern advances. My point was exactly the opposite -- you want an old basic pickup with no features. Why exactly should Toyota (or anyone) manufacture one when there is massive inventory of ancient used pickups? Toyota knows what their market wants, and the proof is their numbers. I ain't a Toyota fanboy. I'm just saying that the sky is blue and they know what most people want, and that's why they sell so many.

As someone who's test drove the Ranger (Lariat trim) and the GM Canyon All Terrain (and countless Tacos), they are all fully capable mid size trucks and I bet almost anybody will be totally happy with either.

No one of these are perfect either but for me, I'd be totally happy with the Ranger or the Taco but waiting for end of year sales and will likely go with whatever has more incentives/discounts (either 2020 Taco or 2019 Ranger).

The typical brand fanboyism and the whole "my truck is better than yours" arguments will never cease to exist (not while forums are around anyways!) .

For all those complaining about no diesel, there are two Toyota 2.8 TD at the EPA testing center in VA right now being evaluated

 

People who need/want diesels buy full-size. And from what I'd seen Mike isn't even interested in diesel for the Tundra.

 

None of the truck comparisons even mention durability and reliability. These clowns and others like them never do. They all test NEW trucks with less than 10K miles. If you keep your truck no more than the warranty then buy whatever hunk of steel you want. I really don't care if my ride feels like a car vs. truck. I bought a truck. I can handle if a knob could be in a better spot. I don't care if I'm not the fastest off the line. I just don't want to have to fix the damn thing all the time. I need to know that when I head to the hills to hunt and catch fish, I won't get stranded up there. Reliability is my #1 metric and trumps almost anything else. Now add a few creature comforts and you have me as a buyer. I don't have a 3rd gen yet but I've driven a friend's on long trips. I do wish they would put an 8 or 10 speed to help with the low end speed but it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me.

 

Um, we are American. Maybe a small diesel would kick ass and be enjoyed by the dozen people who want it here in America.
