Crawl Control Question - Lurching at Lowest Speed Setting

For all those who think it mimics a lower ratio, DON'T! It does not mimic anything except going slow. It does not change the torque output value like 4LO versus 4HI. It does however give you a version of an elocker, meaning it will brake the spinning wheel.

For those who said it lurches at low speed in mild terrain because the truck overruns the speed limiter? You win 100 internet points today! That is exactly what it does. There is no "design flaw" or any foolishness like that. It is simply a slow cruise control. Get the truck on a steep hill and it will smooth right out. Going down is not so smooth though.

Hey, did anyone pick up that "towing" with a mid size truck is in 22nd place as far as reasons people buy a mid size truck? Lol there are 21 other reasons before towing. Would love to know what they are.

 

I wish I knew, truly, what they mean by mogul. I have a dictionary, but it’s not really a common term for 4WD in these parts.

Heard from someone else. Truck idle speed is faster than the crawl control set speed. Truck simply applies brakes when going faster than the set speed. This keeps the system simple and affordable.

^^^ This is actually very wrong. The truck modulates throttle and brakes. It will drive you up a super steep hill you would never ascend at idle. You set your desired speed, and the system applies the required gas to maintain that speed at all costs. On super steep shit, your throttle can be pretty far up in the revs on Crawl Control.

 

Ok, so in summary - If you want to avoid the lurching associated with the slowest setting of Crawl Control, you should only use it in extremely aggressive terrain (over 30 degrees uphill or downhill), or in extremely slippery conditions (snow, ice, wet). Or just tolerate the lurching.

Just wanted to give a little more feedback on the lurching issue at low settings.

Yesterday we had some serious thunderstorms in central Texas. I was able to take off early from work and go test the truck during the thunderstorm.

We have a very large and steep hill at our property at the lake. It’s full of loose rock, large boulders, and slick limestone. When it gets wet it’s an even bigger mess. Here is a photo of the “easy” portion of the hill in my Land Cruiser.



I tested the crawl control feature at lowest setting, both up and down the hill, in the rain yesterday. The lurching subsided at the steepest parts of the hill with the lowest amount of traction. Basically, the system would lurch until traction conditions got really low, then the ABS would cycle very quickly and the system would smooth out and continue to crawl. The system is generally smoother going uphill rather than downhill, because the truck is having to consistently apply throttle, not brakes, to keep the truck moving forward uphill against gravity.

Basically, the lowest crawl control setting performs best when traction conditions are worst.

The video below is a good example. The truck is essentially in a controlled slide descent at the 40 second mark. I’m not sure what the setting is, but it’s not lurching at all.

I'm new to the whole cc and mts thing. I come from a samurai locked f&r on 33s t-case gears and axle gears. It was offroad used only. It would idle up virtually anything up to and including obstacles too steep to climb. Meaning it could go vertical if I didn't stop it.
I have not taken the Taco offloading, but did take it into some dirt to see how the crawl control system works, the crawl speed felt, etc. It was awful. The brakes were pulsing rapidly, and the truck plunged and surged. It felt like it was having a seizure. I probably went 20 feet before putting it back in 2wd and coming back to the house to check out tw for other's experience.

 

General rule, if it is lurching like a teenager learning to drive a stick, your cc is too slow ( meaning the terrain and speed setting dont match) find something actually challenging and mess with it. Should even right out. I was utterly terrified of the thing and thought it was pointless until I really went out and looked for something suited for it.


Also I hope you kept the samurai. My buddy had one and it was ridiculous.

I had my Samurai privilege removed much like my motorcycle privileges. I had that darn Samurai for over 14 years. Long story short, I made a driving mistake and rolled the Samurai 3.5 times, and my wife made an executive decision that it had to go. I did get a rzr in its place, so nobody has to shed a tear. In case anyone cares, after I had my self inflicted motorcycle accident, she took away my riding privileges too. I was allowed to get a supercharged miata with all the track goodies in its place, so again no tears needed. I still have my raptor 700 that hasn't been used in years. I just dont think I can handle another crash to change toys. Lol.

 

Hang onto her bro,, It took me years to realize she wasnt trying to stop me from having fun, she was trying to keep me alive. I miss her terribly (she passed very young) I wonder what she would say if she saw me off road with my Tacoma,lol. I think she would like the crawl control.

Second this. If it's lurching, the terrain isn't extreme enough and you need to increase the speed setting. Basically, the truck has too much traction for the CC to function properly. As the terrain gets more aggressive, and the traction gets worse, the slower speed settings will work very well.
