Hey guys, still looking at a 2016 or 2017 Tacoma to purchase. I've heard that some of the older Tacoma models are very prone to rust, just wanted to ask if anyone here as had any rust issues on the newer models...

Undercoat with fluid film. It'll be fine.

If you live in an area that uses slat on the roads during the winter, if left untreated, you'll have rust issues. In areas that don't, rust will be minimal. Bottom line.....steel will rust.

Inspect the truck you want to buy carefully. Find out where is was last registered. If it was from a salty area, don't buy it. That is my opinion. Rust is not a Tacoma issue, its a location, use, and maintenance issue.

Toyota addressed the issues with prematurely rusting frames if that's what you're worried about. But as others have said, certain areas are going to be way more prone based on what's used on the roads.

Frame or bodywork? 2nd gens weren't particularly rusty and considering that more and more of the Tacoma is plastic now I wouldn't worry about that too much.

Undercarriage will rust, not much you can do about that. But just because something looks rusty doesn't mean it's about to crumble. Surface rust looks terrible but is completely normal on undercarriages in places that see a lot of winter.
