converting 2wd to 4x4

    what's going on,
    wanted to know how hard would it be to convert a 2001 Tacoma TRD V6 (Auto) to 4wheel drive. what does this consist of and how much?

    It would be much more economical to just trade up. I priced it out on my 2nd gen and it came to at least 6 grand.
    You'd need a new transmission w/ transfer case, front axel, cv axels etc.

    It could be done if you wanna but it isn't very economical

    Expeditionary vehicle in training.
    Old Man Emu 2.5" lift, brush guard (about to be changed), grey-wire mod, custom bed mounts for 4 jerrycans, custom survival box, maglite mount, KC Dayliters.
    There are only two reasons I can think of to do that conversion rather than buying a different truck with four wheel drive:

    1) You have LOTS of free time and you love to work on this kind of thing.
    2) You're so attached to this truck that you couldn't stand to see her go.

    Otherwise, do what they said. Find a different truck.

    eh for the 1st gens its not so bad really...and it gives you a chance to have a newer truck with manual hubs :D

    i know a handful of guys on TTORA have done it fairly cheap and fairly easy...the key is to find a guy who has just cut off all of his front end in order to SAC the truck...

    i think TTORA even has an entire folder dedicated to this...

    Look up SarSquid, HillbillyYoung, and Pray4Surf over there...i know off the top of my head those are 3 guys who have 4wd Prerunners now

    i think that converting is actually a pretty good option on the 1st gens if you want 4wd...especially if you already have some modification done to the truck or the truck is paid off...


    it should also be noted that most of the work necessary can be done easily in a weekend if you collect all the parts beforehand...

    Its a pretty easy thing to do. PLUS, you can get a manual transfer case as opposed to the OEM electronic one. Also, your insurance wont go up for haveing a 4x4. :D
    To all those who say its better to trade in for a 4x, well, I know many people who have done the swap for under $1000.00.
