Can Toyota just release a real HID housing already?!

It’s going to be interesting to see how the 2020s compare. Looks like they will come stock with LEDs (available).

 

If you want a mid-upgrade with longer life, then yes. GE +130s will be significantly better but pay for it with much shorter bulb life.

It will be, but the OEM LED reflector headlights don’t look thrilling. Typically lights like those will be stock like performance, but just LED instead of halogen meaning they are whiter but not much if any brighter. However they are then not upgradeable without replacing the housing. I don’t have high hopes for them, I’d bet the Morimoto LED headlight assemblies are brighter at a more reasonable cost though it would be very interesting to see how the beam pattern compares.

 

I'd prefer halogens tbh. And retain the ability to upgrade rather than be stuck with a mediocre led.

 

For what it's worth- My last set of those Philips 100's lasted 26 months. That's in comparison to 12 months for the Silverstars I ran before the Philips. Obvs not all drivers will see the same longevity.

 

Same here, but I am one who also likes the ability to upgrade and tinker with my lights.

Actually sounds pretty on par. I think those are rated at 450 hours. Mine are 200 hours and last a year.

 

I like tinkering, too. I just like trying new stuff and studying the differences and varying characteristics.

 

For sure. I want to put together the best headlight setup possible and want the modularity. To get locked into a basic off the shelf LED setup that matches a stock H11 in output just seems depressing if caring about output over color temp. But I’m sure there are also those that are thrilled over LED for color temp and maintenance compared to halogens.

 

I don't think Toyota's new LED headlight will be reflector based. All LEDs have some type of projector (jewel) in them, nor do I think they will be as bad as regular halogens. Judging by what's out there right now, they should be on par with other LEDs or even better. Oh, and Morimoto is late to the party. I'd personally buy OE headlights rather than the aftermarket.

 

Unfortunately, you're probably right on the performance of OEM Tacoma lighting. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety now rates Headlight Performance and basically, everybody sucks. (And it doesn't mater if you're running halogen, HID or LED as a light source.) Based on what we've seen so far, I doubt anybody's going to significantly raise the performance bar on anything other than a high performance (and high dollar) vehicle. That said, they'll still probably be better engineered than the aftermarket crap that will undoubtedly appear shortly afterwards.

I assume the new Tacoma LED headlights will be like the Tundra's LED setup

 

They have already released photos of them, they are down firing LED reflector headlights. Look up images of the 2020 Tacoma and check out its headlights. As for performance one can only speculate at this point till they are actually tested.

 

I guess I'm not understanding the concern about bulb longevity.
Do you not drive your truck because it's going to need gas?
You fill your tank regularly, but won't change a bulb (that costs less than a tank of gas) every few years? and is just as easy to do.

but this isn't a Yukon, it takes 30 seconds at worst on our trucks.

 

Some people just don't like to mess with it. They're satisfied with a little less performance if it means they don't need to change their bulb for 6 years. And even then, they'd probably have someone else change it for them.

Likewise, some don't wanna spend $60/year on bulbs for arguably minimal gains in performance when they can spend $20 and never buy a bulb again.

Different strokes for different folks. No biggie.
