New 2020 head unit. Buying?

I know this is a crazy queation but is there anyway I can purchase the new 2020 Tacoma entertainment head unit after the truck is released? This entune system is trash!! All you can use it for nice display screen.

 

I think someone said it would likely cost $3-4K from Toyota. Probably just cheaper / easier / better to get an aftermarket headunit paired with a maestro. I’m planning on getting the Avic-w8400nex.

 

You're not alone bro, it appears from all the pics and videos I've seen so far that the outer dimensions of the head unit is identical; it may be a perfect fit physically but whether or not it's plug and play/compatible is the Million Dollar question. I'm also interested as well; think we'll just have to wait until it's released then ask the dealership or the first brave wealthy soul here on TW.
There was a post on a different thread that mentioned a ballpark price of around $2,800; think that estimate was based upon the cost of the current head unit with JBL. About 7 more months we will have our answer.

It'll probably be cheaper to get an aftermarket HU than the 2020 Android/Carplay Tacoma HU. But I agree, Entune sucks and I'll also be looking at this too as an option to replace my HU.

Wow does it really go for that much? I was thinking of getting the new 2020 Tacoma entune as well but if it’s going to be around that price I might have to pass. Do you think a non jbl unit will cost less?

I asked my dealer this question the day they announced android auto. They were inquiring for me if it would be possible. Told me I would have to wait on price till release.

 

In one of the 2020 threads, someone who claimed to be an engineer that worked on them said that you would be able to drop in the 2020 HU into previous 3rd Gens with an adapter/harness. Of course, as others have said, it will be stupid expensive, but if you want OEM it can be done (supposedly).

 

Should be a few Tacoma’s at the wreckers come November 2019.

 

not sure if this would be an option, but I was also interested in CarPlay minus the $3K price tag of a new headunit. I Google'd some options and came across some guys that are doing a factory OEM plug in from nvconnect. I know nothing about them but will definitely investigate.

Reigniting this thread since 2020 models are starting to hit dealer lots in the wild. Searching for the part number for the 2020 head unit with apple car play if anyone has better resources to find it. Not having the best google luck right now.

Got a 2019 OR back in February (didn't have the option to wait for a 2020) and would like the new stock head unit. More inclined to pay the premium for the head unit itself and install it it on my own versus trading in my truck and getting the new one. Don't want to deal with the hassle of loans and credit checks and such. Not to mention putting her back to stock before trade...

 

So I don't have a quote, but dealership people I've spoken to have said it's going to be upwards of $5000 for the 2020 head unit. I ended up going with the Beat Sonic CarPlay system since that's really all I really cared about with Entune 3.0. I ended up paying $450 to add CarPlay/Android Auto to the 2019 head unit. Also, Entune 3.0 requires you to pay an annual fee to keep premium services after the first year.

The Beat Sonic system works great! It keeps the functionality of steering wheel controls (except for skipping tracks which you can do on the head unit) along with using the factory mic. I'm 3 days in and I think it's a great investment if you want the OEM look. Obviously you can still look at the Alpine or Pioneer head units as well.

Yeah I've looked into quite a few aftermarket head unit options and have a few in mind that I like. I appreciate the info. But I want to wait on the 2020 unit and have some more concrete info on hand. I've heard $3-5k for pricing on it, but I'd like to actually get the part number and shop around. If the pricing is absurd as many are speculating, I don't mind waiting patiently for one to be posted up for sale on the groups/forums or finding a totaled tacoma and purchasing it from a scrape yard.

 

I wouldn't be surprised if they lock it down and only sell to people with 2020s, like they did with the Pro grill. Obviously there are ways around that or you could get it from a junkyard once people get them and start crashing, but even so it's not going to be cheap.

Also I don't think they are going to be 100% drop in. You'll probably need to get a new harness, adapter, or possibly do some rewiring. I'd let the professionals get a crack and it, play with it, figure out what is needed, and figure out what does and does not work before running out and dropping a ton of cash on one and finding out it doesn't work or needs so much modification that it isn't worth it.

 

Get the w8500 instead. 10 times better and the wireless CarPlay is flawless

 

Absolutely. Most certainly going to let others be the guinea pigs for this and figure out the ins and outs of it. Maybe in a perfect world it would just be a drop in plug n play lol.

 

I guess I am old school, I use XM radio and the Navigation system that came with the truck. I had Android auto in my F-250 and never used it.
