    Hello everyone!

I just joined the forums as a new truck owner, and a new Toyota Tacoma owner. This is my first truck ever, and she’s less than two weeks old.

So far I am enjoying the truck life, but haven’t had the chance to go do truck owner stuff like park one tire way up on top of a big rock, catch a pallet of bricks dropped from a 60-foot tall A-Frame Gantry Crane, or clap dust off of my dirty hands in slow-motion yet. :D

Now for the brunt of what I believe y’all will believe are very stupid questions:

    1) Today, I realized that I left the interior map light on for about five hours while I was cruising around town with a friend.

I am (most likely stupidly) worried about how much I drained down my brand new battery by accidentally doing this? Is my concern overblown?

    2) I tried searching for this question in the forums, but I couldn’t seem to find anything specific in regard to the stock types and sizes of the stock interior lights. Through the powers of inference and deduction, I am under the impression that the interior lights are halogen. Is this correct?

    3) In order to eliminate this fear and to get some peace of mind going forward, I would like to change these all out for LEDs because I feel they would be brighter and use a very marginal amount of power as opposed to the stock ones. What are the correct bulb sizes?

When everyone stops laughing, please let me know. Thanks in advance! :D

    Thanks for the link!

Do you think I drained out my battery pretty badly by leaving the map light on for 4-5 hours? That’s what I am most worried about...

Yeah, I figured as much. I mean, the battery is less than two weeks old... I just despise the idea that my brand new battery was possibly wasted by my stupid oversight.

Ugh! It’s always somethin’... Thanks again for the LED suggestion.

The description mentions it does come with the backup lights...assuming it would be one of those t10 plug ins.

No worries, thanks for the response. I'm assuming these backup lights are pretty bright though?

I compare the differences between a light from a candle (oem...yellowish) and a fluorescent (white glow) light. So yes they are very bright. While you’re at it, might as well change your headlight bulbs to LEDs too.

How was the fitment of the dome light?

I bought these 31mm bulbs as recommended via a YouTube install video, which I am returning. I don't like how it fit due to the different end caps and 1~2mm extra overall length compared to the stock bulb. It didn't seat fully, and the excess pressure placed on the spring (slotted side) bent it so much so that the stock light didn't fit back in until I bent it back the other way, which likely fatigued the metal fwiw. The light output is impressive, but the color temperature doesn't match the map lights from the same vendor. I'd estimate that the dome light is 5000k whereas the map lights are 6000k.

I've since bought the full interior kit from TacomaBeast and while I like how these replacement bulbs are designed more than the other ones mentioned above, the dome light has the same fitment problem. It's even slightly larger. They list the kit as fitting years 2016-2019.

Then I found that Diode Dynamics lists a 29mm bulb (which seems to have a lens to diffuse the light) for 2018-2019 here and a 31mm for 2016-2017 here.

My frustration with this has me wishing that @crashnburn80 made a brilliantly thorough and detailed post on upgrading interior lights, as he has done for other lighting!

From left to right: OEM, TacomaBeast, JDM ASTAR

These pictures show the poor fitment. This is the TacomaBeast kit bulb.
    IMG_7974.jpg IMG_7973.jpg

Here's the empty socket, the spring is stretched in this pic. Looking at it closer, I'm guessing that people are compressing it at the bend up in the socket in order to get these longer bulbs to fit.
    IMG_7976.jpg IMG_7975.jpg

I know this isn't precise, the bulbs are a bit skewed and the calipers are cheap. Nonetheless, the OEM bulb is around 30.7mm. The TacomaBeast kit bulb is around 31.5mm. The JDM ASTAR bulb is pretty bang on 31mm.
    IMG_7984.jpg IMG_7987.jpg IMG_7988.jpg

Note that I think the largest contributor to the problem I perceive with these bulbs fitment is due to the end cap shape. The OEM bulb has the flat ends that slot into the socket on both sides better than the linear taper of the LED bulbs.

The set I purchased at Amazon looks either like the one in the middle or the end of the picture. It fits snug. I’m not too worried about how the terminal sockets are. The technology is the same as what my 1995 Corolla has. Ive stretched and bent the Corolla’s several times to accomodate technology changes to bulbs over the years and it now has LEDs. The terminals are still alive and kicking. I’m OCD myself but your caliper measurements are a whole different level.:thumbsup:

Lets just say I've spent a lot of time reading through crash's lighting posts this week, and became inspired. :goingcrazy:

So what’s the end result really? What is the Best Led, top quality for our 3rd Gens? Sometimes I’m finding there’s so many opinions like a$$holes, everyone’s got one. Lol

Also Bumper Light bar next up... which is best one out there?

In my opinion, since these are $20ish something bulbs, The cost to benefit ratio comparison on these is very marginal. If they were really expensive then that would be a different matter. Then again thats just me. Im really happy with the LEDs I got. Id be happier if they were free of course.

As promised. Here are the pictures. One picture shows the cargo bed light a little yellowish, Its not it matches with the reverse and license plate ones. I think its just the way my camera focused.

    P.S.

Color temp on mine all match, interior and exterior.

I emailed TacomaBeast about their kit that I purchased for my 2019 and told them about how the dome light bulb doesn't fit quite right. I also told them how Diode Dynamics lists a shorter bulb for 2018-2019 models compared to the bulb they list for 2016-2017. They wrote back and told me:

We have heard of this issue with this latest batch of interior light kits. We are working with our manufacturer to see why this occurred. We have removed the item from the store for now and have initiated a full refund for you.

Please keep the kit and use the bulbs you can or just throw it out. No need to send anything back. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope we can serve you again in the near future with the updated interior kit.

Great customer support, and confirmation that I'm not crazy! I'm using their map, visor, and license plate bulbs with no issues so far.
