Yesterday a buddy of mine who owns a stock TJ and I did this run. It was all fun and games till we got to the mining operation. The creek was running pretty good, maybe bumper high in the narrow part. I spoke with a few others and apparently the mining guy has been dropping boulders in the creek bed. I slid off one of these boulders and hit the skids pretty hard. My buddy had a really rough time getting through there.

Understand I'm not trying to be a buzz kill and it was challenging and fun. I'm just worried at the rate these boulders are being dropped in that soon this road will be impassable to all except highly modified trailered rigs.

My question is that the public roadway has been closed by a private entity, and said private entity is slowly closing his bypass one boulder at a time. Is this legal and if not who should be notified?

I spoke to the owner on Saturday. I find it very unlikely that he’s dropping boulders in the creek bed. If anything, the water and erosion are moving them around along with folks trafficking the area. He is a super nice guy, and was letting folks through his property quite often, even while I stopped and talked. (I made it thru the creek)

Now that I think about it, if he’s putting obstacles in the way, it just makes it more likely that folks ask him to drive through his property to bypass. Or even more likely they ask him for help getting unstuck. Just seems to me that the best way to be left alone (if I were the owner) is for making easy passage on the creek.

Makes sense ^^^ with the heavy wet fall and winter we have had not surprising the debris that will come down washes. I've been wanting to go out that way but waiting for it to dry up a bit.

I agree with this statement, however sometimes folks thinking gets a bit skewed. I noticed that all the camping spots just north of the mining area have big trees dragged to the entrance area in attempt to block the area. Sometimes folks feel, and I'm not saying this guy at this time, but sometimes folks take ownership and needs for solitude a bit too far. You're are right and I have no proof of this boulder moving happening. I just found it strange that the people I spoke to at the site said he was doing it. Also I must add that I'm not a regular on this run, but the people I spoke with gave me the impression that they were.

That looks like the area. It's obviously a little different now though.
On a different note last time I did this trail probably 30 years ago my group stopped for lunch by a creek and were met by gunpoint too. The miner was REAL protective of his claim. I don't remember all the details from back then very well but it was on my mind as we traveled through yesterday.

Wow, I'm sure glad I drove the back way a few months ago before all this. I was nervous about getting free AZ pin-striping on my truck trying to drive between two huge boulders. Super challenging trail for a weekend warrior like me. Hope the trail can remain open....

It will probably still have water running. It's passable, just be sure your skid plates are on and tight. Oh and a little lift and tires wouldn't hurt. :)

Anyone running this trail in the snow? I would love to do some snow wheeling with the snow that's dropping soon.

My only concern would be the road along the mountain just before crown king. Slide off that road and it's a long tumble down a steep mountain side.

I've done a little snow wheeling when I was in Colorado and it was a blast. However, that was in a SAS'd and locked 2nd gen runner on 37's.

So what was the outcome of that miner interaction? I can’t imagine that it’s remotely legal to have someone at gunpoint for a mining claim. With all the people that carry in AZ I’m surprised with that group of people there weren’t multiple guns being pulled.

Yuck! I figured it would be cool with the easy obstacles in the snow.

Well like I said it was 30 years ago so my memory of what transpired is a little hazy. I'm sure I had a .44 magnum in my truck, but that doesn't do you much good when a guy just appears while you're having fun and don't notice him approaching. :)

That sounds like it’d turn dangerous real quick. Chances are nobody else is gonna be out there, except for maybe claim holders or cattle ranchers. If you go off, it’s gonna be awhile before anyone reaches you. I’ve noticed with the Bradshaw’s and many of the other mountains just north of the metro, that it’s often right on the freeze/thaw line. Seems like alot more ice in these areas compared to spots further north. I personally wouldn’t risk it.

I agree on the danger part of it specifically on the shelf road on the moimount side. The rest of the area I think would be fine since you're not going to slide off of anything but an obstacle.

Seems like nobody will answer the question.... isn’t the back way a county road which the public has a right of way to? How can a mining claim close a public road and more so how can a wetland or creak be legally diverted or a road diverted into a creak? I’m from the east coast so maybe AZ is a bit archaic in wetland laws.... lastly why wouldn't the county or whoever is responsible for the road create an alternate bypass on the east side? The river isn’t dangerous for most but 30 miles in on a 500lb adv bike had my blood boiling as the bike nearly went over which could’ve snapped my legs against the wet basketball sized rocks. Made it through but every other section albeit was hard but very passable. 10 years ago this diversion didn’t exist.

From what I’m aware it’s a national forest road where the rocky creek bed is. Legally they can’t and from what I’m aware, mining claims on federal cannot divert natural waterways or creekbeds. Most states have these same laws for state land with claims on them. Legally a claimholder cannot divert or change the path of a roadway or stream. I imagine people out in those parts don’t care about a lot of laws or legalities.
