Love the clean look... What shell is that?

I just switched from a Softopper setup to a Thule XSporter setup for the time being but once I have some more land and can store a trailer I would like to move to a hardtop setup like this.

Oh wow! Way cool!!! I saw a build on here for one. Meaning, a build your own. Total cost is $3k. It's intriguing but at my current productivity rate outside of work, it would take me 10 years. I'm contemplating a RTT.

I’d have loved to have built one but there comes a time when my time is too valuable (read: busy) and would just rather buy or pay someone. Husband built a gorgeous shed for our New Orleans home. Many weekends and nights spent in it. Wanted to build one for our CA home. We were too busy hiking, camping, traveling... and just paid to have a custom TuffShed delivered and built on site. I think ordered to delivery and move in was two weeks?

Same with the camper. (If you find your way out west, this one is for sale. )

Been a while since I've posted in this thread! I've been way more active in the Facebook groups recently but am getting back into TW.
I've started selling custom upholstered consoles and other pieces as well! Here are a couple of my favorites in inferno theme! :D

Thanks for the additional info. A TD is definitely the ultimate in efficiency when it comes to ease of setting up and breaking down camp. It's also a lot of coin for that efficiency. If I knew I'd be using it at least 12 times a year I could get the value out of it. I'll likely only camp half or less than that a year and those times are going to likely just be overnight, or two nights max. A RTT does not compare to a TD when it comes to comfort but I think compared to a ground tent, it has an edge. Even considering climbing a ladder, which I hope is not a big deal for me. I'm not the most coordinated or nimble guy out there. I'm just not sure what I'm going to do yet. I just know I need to make a choice eventually.

It’s a tough decision for sure!

You need to do more camping, it’s sooo worth it to relax the body and brain. I think there’s great comfort in an RTT -compared to a TD- from what I’ve read. Anything is far more comfortable than sleeping on the ground!

We may have ours out 10-15 nights a year, but we knew that going in. It was for shoulder season camping when the weather was too bad for our hammocks. Two incidents that told me we made the right choice :
Got to campsite is a sideways rainstorm that wasn’t going to let up. Got parked, jumped out of truck, jumped into camper, all was cozy.

The wildfire evacuation. I was able to throw soooo much stuff into that little trailer that our loss was not as catastrophic as it could have been.

Additionally, I love that if we are out for more than one night, we don’t have to setup/break down repeatedly to go see sights, go hiking, whatever. Unhook and leave it.

In another day -much younger- I would have been all over having an RTT! At my age, I’ve learned that my comfort and convenience has a price and I’m willing to (reasonably) pay for it.

After we moved back from Hawaii to the states (Marine Dad) and I got into the over 13 year old ages I hung with a bunch of guys and we camped all the time. We lived in the city so we always wanted to get out of it, and nothing stopped us. I've been woken up with 3" of water in the tent and all my gear completely soaked. Had it rain the entire time for 5 days of camping and nothing dry enough to start a fire and eaten uncooked fried rice out of a can. When you're a kid you can persevere a lot better.

Now I'm 56 (57 in July) and have gotten very soft over the years. I already know I will need at least one fan in any temps above 50 and any humidity over 40%. Fortunately I am not affected by the cold like most people. So I hope to do most of my wheeling trips in fall, winter and spring. Summer is ok but it will have to be draught situations. I live in the country so I know what the humidity can be like in the summer.

I agree with you on all points. I have a tonneau so my gear will be stowed under that, and if I go this route, a RTT on a rack high enough to allow me to open it (the tonneau) yet not so high as to push the RTT too far above the roof line increasing drag. I will ultimately have a cab rack with a wind deflector that I hopes push it up over the tent.

But yes, being able to load a trailer and then arriving, dropping it, immediately exploring/wheeling, then coming back to set up camp would be absolutely ideal. The saving grace with a RTT is that setup is literally minutes from what I hear. So technically I could unload the truck, throw a tarp over everything, and then wheel. The whole reason for all of this is that most places to wheel around me are a couple hours away and I am not into driving 2.5 hours, wheeling, then driving home another 2.5 hours. Plus we have a Maryland member that owns property up in WVA and that is almost 4 hours away so that is a weekend trip for me. Another guy lives down in NC and I want wheel with him and his crew.

So slowly but surely I'm outfitting the truck for moderate wheeling and extended periods away from home doing it.

Finding a newer used, well maintained TD is no easy feat. Found ours in Indianapolis. Drove from CA to get it, it was such a good deal. If you have the patience, search runaway campers, a couple years old. Their new price is pretty decent and depreciation on the used market makes them pretty cheap. (~$3000 or less)

I bet there’s a TW person would let you try setting up, climbing up an RTT. I wish I had tried that before I ruled them out instead they of making an uninformed decision.

Yea, I see some that are new and the prices are bonkers. If we lived out there or if my wife was into it I would be all over something special. We have a in-ground pool and barely have time for that in the summer. Seems the older I get the less time I have to play.

They are having an RV show & sale here this weekend. If I had the time I would go check them out. Just for the fun of it to be able to crawl around in them. They might even have some RTT's set up. I'm in no rush. I want to this to be a solid decision so I don't have any regrets down the road. I have a friend here are work willing to let me borrow any one of his 4 tents. When I hunted I would ground tent camp. So I know what's in store with that. Gimmie a wide cot, a soft sleeping bag and a tent large enough to stand up in and I will be comfy. Thing is, all that setup and breakdown. I am just not into it. The price though makes me wonder. The RTT unless it is used is going to run at least $1500. Then the bed rack will be nearly another $500. For $2k I better be happy. Like you said, some TDs can be had, used for a grand more, give or take.

It will come together and no matter what I will overthink the hell outta it.

One like that goes for 100 bucks, and I do need the lid sent to me to upholster it professionally. I have options starting at 60 bucks though.
