Gy6.35 HIR 921 reverse light upgrade (vs high power LEDs)

These are way brighter than stock! The wires on mine looked brittle, so I took a screwdriver to the socket instead. The bulbs went in fine. They have stayed in place and both still work. I got my 3rd gen for Christmas and I am still trying to get it just right.

 

Thanks for the great mod OP! Braved the polar vortex weather and installed the Osram 35w HIRs tonight.

Only got pics from the back-up camera but very happy with them so far.
1- Stock // 2- HIR & stock // 3- HIRs

I want to get 5 of these bulbs. Plan to swap out on 2015 4Runner and 2016 Tacoma. So an extra 1 bulb incase i mess up.

Got 5 of these tiny bulbs. Was surprised how tiny boxes were (about size of cigarette lighter).

Ordered late in the day on 02/19.
(Via NewEgg/Seller: Bulb America).
Shipped the next day on 02/20.
Received today 02/22.

Hope to install these on 4Runner/Tacoma in next few days.

 

Newegg is great, I’ve bought other stuff there before. If you look at your bulb in that photo, the iridescent rainbow look of the bulb is the IR coating used to overdrive the bulb. That’s how you know it is the good stuff.

 

The size got me too. Opened the box, pulled out the paper wrapping, though they sent me an empty box lol.

 

Thanks for this post. I've ordered the Osram 35w but haven't installed them yet. I came across Diode Dynamic's 921 LED that they market as "omnidirectional" and found it interesting. What do you think? https://www.diodedynamics.com/921-hp36-cool-white-led-one.html

 

That is not an omnidirectional lamp. It is multi-directional for sure, but omni-directional means all directions. It isn’t possible to have an omni-directional LED unless you built a perfectly packed LED sphere. For starters, where are the LEDs pointing to the back toward the connector to face into the reverse reflector? You’ll also notice a stock 921 bulb is 264 lumens, those are 208 lumens. So it isn’t going to perform as well in the assembly as stock and is lower output than stock.

I forgot about this and ruined a bulb just now lol.
After i looked this up again, it was 100x easier than trying to bend/curve the pins on the bulb. The metals are are holding the pins firmly after i squeezed socket prongs together. Thanks man!

Finally got some time to replace the reverse bulbs on 2015 4Runner. I broke a bulb trying to bend the pins on a bulb. Bending or pushing the socket prongs turned out to be WAY easier and the bulbs are firmly in place! Tacoma is next and i’ll try to get better pics then. A family member took these pics even after i explained which directions to take pics. HAH!

As a comparison, you can tell the left is OSRAM and right is OEM

 

Even better than facing the vehicle, is if you can get some reverse photos projected against a wall or garage to demonstrate the output difference. But yeah, there is no comparison in output to the HIRs.

 

Just finished replacing these on Tacoma. I’ll have more pics later but here are some quick comparisons.

1) Thomas the train is about 8 ft away from the truck.
2) The huge NBA basketball hoop is about 16 ft away.
3) The garage door is about 21 ft away.
4) Top pics as you can tell are before and bottom is after replacing with Osram 35w.

Bought the new 35w for my truck a while back and they're awesome! Walked behind the wife's car yesterday as I locked it and noticed that she has a reverse light out, so looks like she is getting a pair of lights as well!
