Front Recovery Point 2013 TRD

Hello, brand new member here...
I've googled, I've read a bunch of threads and discussions and I am still not 100 % on the answer. So here goes my question:

I am the sole owner of a 2013 Tacoma TRD 4WD with the off road and tow package. In years past my truck stayed in the city but lately we have been venturing out onto more dirt roads and snowy conditions.

Is there a factory installed recovery point on the front end and if so, where is it located, or are there only tow/tie down/hook points which are not recommended for recovery?

I am not planning on doing anything gnarly out there off road but I do frequently encounter snowy conditions and if I ever get stuck and needed the recovery strap on the front end, I want to make sure the recovery strap is correctly placed. So much to learn and trying not to learn it the hard way...

 

First off, Welcome to TacomaWorld!

If you look at post #2 on this thread you should already have this recovery point on the TRD Offroad. It would be on your passenger side.

There have been some people who have used the other loop in a pinch but I believe that is meant for tying down your vehicle when getting towed. If for whatever reason you don't have the original recovery point, you can buy one from SOS concepts or bulletproof fabrication is having a deal right now where if you buy one of their front skid plates it will come with a bolt on recovery point as well

You are lucky to have one of those. My truck didnt come standard with it so I had to find one!

Since the shackle is smaller than the receiver / does not fit around the receiver I believe my options are this:
1) Buy a shackle / D ring hitch for a 2" receiver
2) Buy a hitch pin ( rated for what I am not sure..I have a pin but it is for my bike rack so I don't trust the strength of it)
3) Buy a bigger shackle?
******assuming here that the holes to the left and right of the receiver that came with the tacoma tow kit are NOT suitable for the shackle and recovery strap (photo attached) and are only for safety chains. Can I get your input as to which option I should go with? Go easy on me, I'm just trying to learn. I have watched a ton of youtube videos on do's and dont' but there is also a lot of misleading info out there so I think this forum has better potential.

 

I sent a boat rope through the center of the hitch and tied it off to tow some dudes out of the snow. Worked like a charm

 

I carry a hitch with no ball in it for people who don't have recovery points....a shackle fits through it fine....and I can still use it for towing....or just use the pin. Put the recovery strap inside the reciever and put the pin in place. That works too

@VT, I like it , my only reservation would be it is rated for 11,000 and the strap is rated for 34,000. Still learning about all those factors too, but thinking it might be best to get a higher rated shackle hitch set up ????

Get a quality snatch strap and tow rope for recovery situations.

 

I got one of these and a winch that will be installed soon.

 

OP, just buy an extra pin. Put the strap through the hitch then feed the pin throught the loop. Good to go.

 

Should be fine....these trucks will not be dealing with anything near the 11,000lb range. I have an overhead lift strap rated for 60,000lbs, even though i'll never move anything over 10k with this truck...just cause I got it for free from work.
