Probably go this route instead. Install should be a breeze.

This is a great mod. Toyota used to have a locking keyed fuel door for only a couple years on the 1st Gen, then did away with it.

Speaking of which, I had one of these for 12 years in my 1st gen worked great

5 seconds with a screwdriver and all that work for nothing, plastic is a waste of time.
The old all metal locking gas caps were great.

My truck has a block heater that's plugged in all the time on those days.

You're right, it keeps the honest ones out. If someone really wants to mess with your stuff they're going to regardless. It's a fun mod I don't regret it.

I liked the locking fuel door on my old 2000 Tacoma too.

The flaw in your system is that thieves will most likely drill your gas tank before they siphone anything. Good job though

Random thought for all those in areas that get sub freezing temperatures each winter.

I have seen folks post, possibly in the 1st gen section or even another site, mods using motorcycle grip warmers added to the truck mirrors as de-ice/defrosters.

Here is a posing doing the mirrors of a 2nd gen.

ever thought about doing something similar to your gas door? Should be an easy mod as if they are not self adhesive a vinyl overlay should do the trick for securing it. IF you have the Gasshole from @mesojdm it would also be hidden. I would tie it into the mirror defroster circuit so it already has a timer to turn it off. so if your door is frozen shit just switch on the mirror defroster and wait 1 or 2 minutes.

That's a great idea! It would save a lot of headache dealing with an iced up fuel door.

    Thanks. :hattip:

Please post it up if you wind up doing it. I am sure it could be beneficial for many north of the Mason/Dixon line.

I will not be doing it as I am not sure I have seen temps stay under 32F for more than 24 hours in the last couple decades, excluding a couple times I trekked north to visit relatives. Now they come south to visit me. :D

Wow, how do you wash a truck at -30 C? I think I would be hanging out by a blazing fire trying to keep warm.

Also, on one of my work vans, the thieves just cut the pipe. They don’t care about damaging your vehicle for $20 in gas.

Someone in the 2nd gen group had made a kit for them a few years back. I PM the guy but he never responded. I think he went MIA. I decided to do something similar and make a powered gas door but I Macgyver all of my parts and materials from a VW, Toyota and other misc pieces. I would have posted what I did, but there was no way i could answer questions since some parts were fabricated and others were bought from sellers on ebay and Amazon. It was just a fun mod to do, and will only keep out people that want to mess with your gas, not really the people that drill the tank to take the gas.

The switch is from a VW, the lock with cable from an MR2 (i think), power lock actuator from Amazon, aluminum latch i fabricated. I mounted the actuator to the storage compartment in the bed (hidden behind it) so it could be manually opened should the power actuator stop working.

In an indoor car wash but once you drive out there's no stopping it all from freezing unless you were to dry the whole thing. I usually just use a chamois on the paint. I don't bother drying the door jambs and fuel door.

I like your setup. I'm going to switch mine to a electronic release one of these days. I like your emergency release location too.

Thanks this mod just went on the list. absolutely Genius, especially to someone like me who knows nothing about cars, i would never have thought this was a possibility. But as I spend more time on TW and see things like this it opens my mind to think of all kinds of stuff that might be possible on my truck!
