    Order number: 3111

    Date purchased/date installed: 1.04 circa 9/1/18, TSB on 12/31/18, 1.05 on 1/5/19.

Version / transmission of the calibration you're running currently: 89663-04B04 (post-TSB and 1.05)

Star rating you give it: 5

Any mods that would impact (tires, gears, exhaust, etc.,): Stock

    Overall feedback of:
Shifting - 1.05 is absolutely spot on at all speeds. Stock sucked, 1.04 was a large improvement but rough around the edges, the TSB I think was slightly better than 1.04, but 1.05 is perfect to me.

Throttle - I can more predictably select a position for my foot that will produce a given acceleration. I no longer have to hunt the proper accelerator position to coax the transmission into doing what I want the truck to do.

Power - I'll be honest I don't feel much extra oomf with my butt dyno, even on 91. I trust it is there, I just don't think I can detect it myself.

Fuel economy - Stock I was getting around 18mpg combined. 1.04 I was getting around 16mpg, which I think was due to the majority of driving below 35mph and it liked to be in a lower gear than stock at those speeds. The TSB, through about 200 miles, got me about 17mpg. The jury is still out for 1.05, I need to put more miles on it, but I imagine it will be like the TSB with the way it shifts at lower speeds.

New memeber looking at the OV tune closely. Have a 19 OF AT with around 6k miles. Initially, I began hating driving the truck during this learning process that is spoke of often. So bad in fact I was very much thinking about taking the hit and trading for an eco boost F150. However, the truck has settled now drivability wise which I've happy about. I do tow a 3k lbs Ropd rv. Recently towed it on a 1600 trip to visit family. It towed pretty good as I left the truck in S4 (1:1) which put me at 3k ish on the interstate at 70 mph (10 mpg avg). Without cruise it did pretty good. WITH cruise, it would shift down to 3rd often because of heavy throttle responses so I left it off.

    My questions:

    - Are there any OV tune people towing that has imput on any pros or cons of the tune while towing?
    - Is there feedback on the manual auto option in relation to towing? I believe I would really like this option as a way to reduce the 4,500 rpm kick downs to 3rd when not really needed.

    Thanks.

Anyone have a verdict on whether the auto transmission relearns its old ways?

I know Mat said he couldn't eliminate all the learning, some has to happen. I have about 1000 miles on 1.05 and it is still great. Some learning has happened...for the better, things smoothed out. So my opinion is even if some learning happens, it is still WAY better than stock. I do not have a need to 'reflash" to get performance back. Just my opinion and experience.

Yes, I felt 1.04 degraded some but it was still better than stock.

What would you say the biggest benefit is? I’ve read through all of these reviews and it almost seems too good to be true. I went to the ford dealership last week to test drive an f150 with the eco boost because I was fed up with the tacos performance. That f150 made me realize how sluggish this truck feels. If it weren’t for this stupid shutdown I probably would have bought a brand new truck that day.

I think you will get different opinions from the differences people use the truck. I HATED my truck on the highway and I'm stock. Now, I can drive and not be thinking, wtf is my truck in 4th, when it should be in 6th?!? I just get in and drive and it acts like I expect. I can now drive on the highway using mostly 6th at 75 mph (even in a head wind). If it has a reason to downshift, like elevation, it does it smoothly and predictably. Here's a pic of my doing a 50 Mile commute at 75 into a headwind, it was in 6 the gear the entire way, except a couple of times for a few larger overpasses. <Sigh>, finally enjoyable on the highway. I was also ready to get rid of it too before ovtune.

I feel the same way on the performance difference. We have an 3.5 ECOboost in our fire dept EMS vehicle with almost 50k miles on it. I have to say I feel emergency response environments have to be some of the most severe duty situations. 911 alarm goes off, we get in the truck, engine cold, and put our foot in it. To date the eco has been troublefree. I like the tacoma a lot but the eco does impress.

If you are not stock (lifted and bigger tires), you may want additional opinions. I'm stock, and don't have that experience.

I'm stock too. Bigger tires take away my gears and I tow so thats a no go in my case. Your input is perfect for my case.

Ok so those who have it and are running the 87 load, do you all utilize the 91 octane, if so how is the response? I only ask is I were to drive somewhere that 91 is not available then it shouldn’t be a big deal. Have been running 91 for some time now as I wanted to know if it really made a diff to the wallet, I’m currently getting about 17.8 mpg now, running 285/75/16 and have had tsb updates. I recently picked up a used time but need to buy license yet.

I ran a test without the tune 0-70mph then I repeated on the same road same condition with the 87 tune no change to time. I then, after that tank was empty, filled up with 93 and installed the 93 tune. After about 100 miles on the tune I ran it again. No change in time the same as stock. I ran that tank out and refilled with 93 and ran it again. No change. Am I missing something?
I do like what it has done for my trucks shifting and throttle response. But I can't tell any difference in power. I am changing back to 87 today.

probably because you are only testing the Base tune for 04A60, when the performance A60 tune releases you will see a very big difference.

Is this performance increase going to be limited to 93/91 only?

My truck shifts fine with the TSB so my interest in the tune has always been regardings the acceleration improvements but so far all the vids I have seen posted don't show any.

I don’t understand stand what you are talking about. I received files for 87,91,and 93 octane.

The base version of the tune is setup for best MPG and highway, not for power. The performance version (soon to be released for that ECU version) is.

I don’t know how old this post is? Looks like yesterday. I am new to this forum and coming from a 2011 F150 5.0 with the OZ tune and prior to that, the 5star tunes. I bought my 17 TRD off-road without even knowing what I was buying. Barely even test drove it. Needed to consolidate my car and truck for 1 vehicle, I knew I wanted a Tacoma with 4x4. Long story short, here I am. Ok. After having the OZ tune on my F150, going to this Tacoma was very difficult. I immediately started researching tunes. I see that really the only tune available is the OV tune. However it is Very expensive and a bit more complicated to install. Not extremely but not having it on a (handheld) tuner a bit disappointing. I can’t speak for how great or not the OV tune is because I don’t have it. However I know after having a tuned vehicle, the electronic approach is MUCH better than spending a ton of money on exhaust, intake etc.. Best bang for buck! What I can testify to for people that want to get rid of the sluggish pedal and some of the shifting especially with oversized tires is the Pedal Commander and Hypertech Speedo calibrator. With an all in price of $460 through Amazon, I am VERY Pleased! I see a ton of people talk about the pedal Commander being a joke or, same as pushing harder, I disagree. These 2 items fulfill about 90% of what I would expect out of a (tune) spending $300 less. I’m running 295/70-17’s averaging 18 mpgs on the highway with stock gears and very happy with the feeling of the pedal commander. You can’t drive the vehicle as smoothly and quickly without mashing the pedal without the pedal commander. I could ramble for hours. Lol but just wanted to let everyone know that yes I’m sure the OV tune is (awesome!), but if it’s just not in your budget or tech ability, the pedal commander by itself or paired with the Hypertech Speedo calibrator is another very good option. Don’t let some of these guys talk u out of it. Just some options that I have tried and experienced first hand. Maybe should of started my own topic, sorry if I’m out of line but wanted to put this somewhere. Take care everybody and Happy to be a new member of this group!!
