Hey guys... I just bought a 2019 TRD Off Road and I've only had it a couple weeks. I love the truck so far but in the last 3 days it's developed a shudder or miss when it's cruising at or around 1500 rpm's. Sometime's it's very subtle and other times it's much more noticeable. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm only on my 3rd tank of fuel...first tank I have no clue what was in it from the dealer and the 2nd tank I ran 87 octane. I bought gas yesterday and put 89 in it hoping for a better result but that's been a no go. I'm going to take it in to the service department first of the week but geez... super disappointed.

The only thing that worries me is its not showing a light or anything. My experience with some service departments in the past have been less than helpful when there's not a clear cut sign of the issue, but to be fair never had a run in with Toyota.

I've had the same experience, brand new 19 OR DC AT and yes, exact same symptoms.

It feels like it gasps for air and micro stutters frequently. I'm just trusting it goes away.

Edit: I experience it around 3k-4k rpms though under medium throttle, not 1500.

This is one of the most rational posts on this issue. Thank you.

The engine does do some strange things especially when under load in a high gear at low rpm. Follow the break in procedure and if you don't like how it feels during low rpm cruising give it a little more pedal until it downshifts or stops shaking.

Between the injector cleaning cycles and the switching between Adkinson and Otto it is easy to think there is something wrong compared to other vehicles. Once you get a few hundred miles on it I think a good WOT acceleration run is a good idea.

It has an interesting power band which also takes some time to adapt to.

Try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for a few minutes. I know this sounds dumb, but I did this both after I got the truck and after I had the TSB installed and it runs much better than right after a flash and stock

Ok cool yeah I'll give those a try. The truck has about 800 miles on it now. I kind of drive it like a grandpa but I'll get my foot in it a little and see what happens

call the Service department, and read the owners manual before jumping to conclusions that there is something wrong with the truck.

Originally not Expo AF! Kinda Expo AF now...lame.
To be honest OP, the truck made noises, studdered, and clattered (when going slow and applying medium throttle) the entire time I had it for 2 years.

No lights, never hurt anything. I got rid of the truck but it wasn't due to a mechanical fault, and it wasn't because I was worried about it breaking.

My wife's 4runners fuel injectors clatter something fierce, but it's normal, they all do. The injector cleaning cycle on the 3rd Gens is crazy sounding too, but it's normal.

In a nutshell, this truck makes some Dr. Seuss noises constantly but it's not broken.

Disconnect the battery terminal on a brand new 40k truck to fix things.

    Gotta love this truck

Not trying to resurrect my old thread but just wanted to update the situation. So I went back and forth with my dealer and finally had a chance to meet with a regional field tech from Toyota who told me this was a characteristic of the truck. Since then I bit the bullet and purchased ovtune and it didn't fix the shudder. I don't think it's necessarily something with the tune because I can put the truck in 4 high and it goes away. What could it actually be??? Play in the drive shaft? Ugh this is driving me nuts..

At first it was a departure from a silky smooth inline 6 in my lexus, but I have embraced the taco tick.
In regards to the misfire/shudder, my truck does this a bit below 2500 rpm in 6th under moderate throttle.(manual)

Using 93 octane helps imensely with the smoothness of power delivery in my truck. I have tried switching back and forth multiple times and have come to the conclusion that its not my imagination.

My truck makes all of the following noises:

Same observation here. 91 gas makes it run and shift better.

Had an issue like that with my F150. Hooked it up to the IDS at work and seen it was missing a bit. I changed the plugs out and warranted them. Helped tremendously. Didn’t really looked fouled. Looked like 1-2 has slight signs of carbon tracking on them if I remember correctly. Probably would of helped it run a little better if I ran premium but I just stuck with 87. Anyways it ran a a lot better after I changed the plugs. Mine had ~10-12k on it when I did that I think. You’d think your plugs should be ok but maybe one is missing slightly.

I think its the shift pattern in the taco D/T the trans. At least mine feels that way. Mine has this odd shudder like feel also and at 5k miles is same as new. Like the whole truck shudders then it shifts. Kinda constant for me. Maybe its switching cycles abruptly?? Feels like running the wrong jets in a carbed motor. Toyota says its normal operation and will not even look at the truck without it being dead or having a bunch of dash lights on. So hopefully they help you. Keep us posted. Also have an awful rev hang/delay when trying to accelerate, literally no response for a good second plus after pushing the gas to go faster. Like trying to pass someone or go around is unsafe since you sit there waiting for the truck to respond. Again least thats what I feel with the shudder/delay on my truck

Sounds like 'normal operations' to me:

I live at altitude (~5300') and I notice it most (every day) in cold weather conditions, but have had it happen infrequently during the summer as well. The truck will intermittently hesitate/stumble while accelerating, it feels like I let off the gas for a second and then step back on it, it lasts for a split second and then drives normal again. It does not have to be from a stop.

I have a manual transmission and I usually shift from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd around 3k rpms, which will drop the rpms down to ~1500 after shifting; right around and only around ~1500 rpms does the hesitation happen (I have not noticed it happening any other time), but not every time, only randomly.

I've noticed it most during colder weather, I don't get any codes/CELs, I've tried different octanes (86, 91) from different gas stations (costco, conoco), I've made sure there are no air leaks in the intake system, I do not have any engine mods, it doesn't matter if the truck is cold or fully warmed up, it doesn't matter if I'm on a hill, flat ground, turning, or going straight. The truck has never stalled from this, and this is happens on a normal paved road that is not slick or iced.

Took it to the dealer and he told me that this was normal operation of the Otto/Atkinson motor and that I was shifting too low (I normally shift around 3k rpm)... Basically, if I didn’t want to feel the hesitation, I need to rev it out more so the needle doesn’t drop below 1500 rpm between shifts. He said that that must be where the motor is switching over from Otto to Atkinson and for whatever reason (outside temp, throttle position, etc) the motor stumbles right there.

I've now got ~16k miles on the truck and have done the transmission tsb but I still have the same problem.

I too have this shudder. I will try higher octane, thanks for the suggestion.
I have less than 5,000 miles and I’m very disappointed with this constant shudder.
